CrazyEgg – Tracking Visitor Clicks
Traditional web statistics software show you information such as website traffic, search terms, and most visited pages. But none of them tell you what, where, and how often your visitors click on a page. Crazyegg is the tool you need.

Simply enter the page name (for your memory) and URL. Set the length of test, either by length of time or amount of visits. Then, add a description to remind you what is the test about. You will be given a line of JavaScript code to be pasted into your web page. I pasted mine into the page footer (before </body> tag).

Crazyegg features: Overlay, List, and Heatmap
Crazyegg has three kind of reports: Overlay, List, and Heatmap. The Overlay report shows page hotspots in beautiful bars with number of clicks and percentage. List report is a table of link, clicks and percent. Heatmap, my favorite, is a beautiful overlaid image of hotspots area.
What I learned after Crazyegging
- Visitors like the top search bar
- Visitors select “LiewCF.com” for search, instead of “Web”
- Most popular posts in “Most Popular” list are wallpapers.
- The [more] link to my About page is HOT.
- The “Add your link here” link is HOT.
My two cents
Crazyegg is a nice tool to understand your visitors activities(read: clicks). Google Analytics has a similar feature called “Overlay” but it does not generate the beautiful heatmap. I wish Crazyegg can track ALL PAGES like Google Analytics.
I experienced a few timeout when accessing Crazyegg. I think it is a bit over busy tracking all the clicks. Currently, it has tracked more than 6 million clicks.

Crazyegg is a neat tool that gives you a clear picture of where visitors are clicking on your site. We’ve been using it to track traffic on our sites and we’ve been really impressed with it. It’s dead simple, beautifully executed, and damn useful (plus it’s built on Rails).
