Review: Crucial.com Memory Module Upgrade Kit

Crucial Memory Kit for iMac

Memory upgrade is the most cost effective way and fastest way to upgrade your computer performance. With more RAM, your computer would run faster and more room to keep background processes.

In February 2010, I received an email from Crucial.com, the Memory Experts, which offered me a product sample (memory module kit) for my computer system. (I’m using Apple iMac)

But, I didn’t know what kind of RAM installed in my computer?! There are so many brands, different RAM, different speed, Dual channel or not, etc.

Crucial System Scanner tool

Crucial System Scanner tool is a free tool quickly scans your PC or Mac to show you all the information you need to know about choosing the 100% compatible memory upgrade for your computer.I ran the Crucial System Scanner tool for Mac (beta) on my iMac. The tool display scanning result on a web page. It correctly detected the iMac model, number of memory slots available, compatible RAM type, and upgrade suggestions.

The prices of Crucial.com RAM is very competitive. It is only USD$104 for the 4GB kit, while Apple is selling at USD$200.

The tool failed to detect the installed memory. My iMac had 2 different brands memory module installed, 1GB + 2GB (total 3GB).

However, the Crucial System Scanner tool correctly detected the installed memory after the Crucial memory modules upgrade.

I guess it’s a bug in the beta version of the scanner tool. Anyway, it is not an issue to me. I knew how many GB of RAM my computer has.

If you know your computer system well, you can, alternatively, use the Crucial’s Memory Advisor tool to find the compatible memory module for your system.

Crucial RAM, received!

To get my product sample, I email the link of the memory scanning result page to Crucial.com.

1 week later, I received the Crucial memory module in UPS Express Pad Pak. That’s very fast shipping!
