Here’s What Maxis Do NOT Tell You about Maxis ONE Plan

(Image: modesty by Lexie Lannom, on Flickr)

MaxisONE plan is the new Maxis postpaid plan launched on 30 May 2014. The Internet plans offer free calls, free SMS, and flat rate data roaming.

“It is the only internet plan that offers limitless talk and text, an ‘Always On’ internet experience and worry-free roaming.”, say Maxis.

The plan looks great but there are some hidden information you may want to know before subscribing. Read on to know what Maxis not telling you openly.

What Maxis tell you

MaxisONE banner

Two MaxisONE plans are available: MaxisONE plan lite (RM78) and MaxisONE plan (RM128).

Maxis ONE plan lite

  • Limitless calls to all Maxis/Hotlink numbers
  • Limitless SMS to all Maxis/Hotlink numbers
  • 1GB monthly data quota
  • No extra charges after data quota
  • One flat rate data roaming in 106 countries (RM38/day)

MaxisONE plan

  • Limitless calls to all networks (including fixed line)
  • Limitless SMS to all networks
  • 2GB monthly data quota
  • Data quota is upgradable up to 6GB for RM30/GB/month
  • No extra charges after data quota
  • One flat rate data roaming in 106 countries (RM38/day)

You can temporary increase data quota with purchase of Data Boost. It is one-time fee and non auto-renewal.

Maxis offer three smartphones with both MaxisONE plans: Huawei Y530, HTC One M8, Samsung Galaxy S5.

What Maxis do not tell you…

1. Limited Limitless

“Limitless talk and text” means “unlimited call and SMS”, right? Wrong.

Though Maxis uses “limitless” in the postpaid plan, it actually has a FUP (Fair Use Policy) of 3,000 minutes call and 3,000 SMS per month.

Yes, 3000 minutes and 3000 SMS are a lot, still it is not all-you-can-talk/text plan. It is about one and half hour call and 100 SMS per day.

[Tweet “MaxisONE plan is NOT all-you-can-talk/text plan”]

After exceeded the monthly bundle (3000 minutes and 3000 SMS), you will have to pay per use:

  • MaxisONE plan lite: RM0.15 per minute and RM0.10 per SMS (all networks)
  • MaxisONE plan: RM0.10 Maxis/Hotlink call and SMS, RM0.15 other networks call and SMS.

2. ‘Always On’ Internet is not usable

Maxis does not charge you after used up all data quota, but your mobile connection speed will drop to a slow speed. The data speed is so slow that you will pull off all your hair and pay for data boosters.

3. More smartphones with Maxis ONE plan

Besides the already told MaxisONE plan with Huawei Y530 (free), HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5, Maxis also offer the following smartphones:

  • Sony Xperia Z2
  • Sony Xperia M2
  • Xiaomi Mi3
  • HTC Desire 816
  • HTC Desire 310 (free)
  • Huawei Y330 (free)

All smartphone with MaxisONE plan is tied to 24 month (2 years) contract.

4. Flat rate data roaming with quota

The RM38 per day flat rate data roaming in 106 countries is subject to Fair Usage Policy. Meaning, it has a data quota limit. Do not dream to download movies while you are using data roaming.

Maxis have not tell what is the data quota limit. I guess it depends on the local telco you are visiting.

Anyhow, if exceeding the unknown fair usage limit, your mobile Internet speed will be very very slow. You can purchase another data roaming pass (RM38) to recover the Internet speed.

You would not be charged for exceeding data roaming quota limit, however.

5. Other charges

Though not sure why you still use these on smartphone, anyway, there are charges for video calls and MMS. 1 minute video call will charge you 15 sen (on-net) or 40 sen (off-net). Each MMS is 25 sen (on-net) and 50 sen (off-net).

MaxisONE plan in details

Here I made a table better showing MaxisONE plan structure:

Maxis ONE plan details
Maxis ONE plan details

When you use the words “FREE” and “Limitless”, I am expecting “free and unlimited”. Yes, I know it would be too good to be true and not practicable in business.

Please do not shout “limitless” when it has limit (FUP).

MaxisONE plan is best for smartphone users who talk and text a lot. If you talk and text less, check out Maxis TalkMore plans. If you consume Internet data more than you call & SMS, use Maxis SurfMore plans.

Take note that MaxisONE plan lite’s free talk and text is only Maxis network. Unless all your family, friends, and customers are on Maxis network, MaxisONE plan lite might give you bill shock.

  1. Just to clarify, what do you mean by On Net SMS and On Net video calls?

Also, this plan is not available for iPhone users?

  2. I think this is good deal…..that’s a lot of voice calls and SMS. I mean, do you really need 3000 minutes and 3000 SMS? 1GB data is also enough for me since I don’t do a lot of video streaming. All around, I think this is a good offering :)

    • FUP=limit
Limitless=Unlimited (usage without need to pay extra)
      If FUP and claimed limitless=cheat
If hidden information=scam or trap (24 months contract bond)
3000min is a lot for some users. but the comment is not about it.

  3. I don’t want to sound like I’m on their side. But the truth is, this plan works for me. I was on 1GB and by the 20th day I’ve run out. I just needed that bit more. The data booster solves my problem.

    • Maxis Fibre Internet is unlimited download but FUP applied. Meaning, no download limit for now but Maxis has the right to cap it anytime.

By the way, TM Unifi has download quota limit but they don’t apply until further notice.

  4. Well the surfmore plan works if you’re predominantly a heavy data user. But if you talk quite alot, and random data user, this sounds like a good plan.

I personally use about 10 hours (600 minutes) of calls every month, which … 3000 minutes is overkill for me though (50 hours). So this doesn’t really work for me especially when i use about 4GB of data every month.

However friends of mine who does about 25 hours of calls every month, (1500 minutes), this is quite a good steal @ RM128/=. Bear in mind those who call alot normally don’t data alot on 3G/LTE. Normally the bills would amount to 3-5 times the amount of RM128.

Not sure how this LitePlan is lite, … but the ONEPlan is competitive for all the call heavy people.

    • I agree with you, Lawrence. That’s also what I said in the end of article. :)

Lite plan is free 3000 minutes & 3000 SMS for Maxis/Hotlink numbers. Call & text to other telco networks or land lines will be charged per-use.

    • hi Lawrence, probably you can consider digi smartplan 148.. this plan give you up to 6gb data and 600 min and 600 sms. digi usim is 128k which is fast enough to surf on both 3g and 4g network.

Comparing with oneplan, you need to topup another rm60 which make your up to rm188 to enjoy another 2gb data to meet your needs.

  5. actually it’s not too bad, because most of the time when i’m at home or in the office i’m on wifi anyway. am considering porting back in so maybe this is the plan for me…

  6. They are charging RM128 for OnePlan which gives 2GB internet and 3000min, 3000SMS, if customers use 50% of the minutes and SMS to DiGi/Celcom/U-mobile, they have to count 3000X5cents=RM150 for outpayment cost [interconnection charge for inter-operator calls and SMS]………..ignoring the cost of 2GB internet, for the interconnenction charge itself they have to pay RM22 from pocket…….curious to see next quarter financial report. LOL

  8. guys, dont forget about your monthly committed fee that you need to pay ON TOP of whatever additional plan that you are subscribing to….so this is how and why our telcos (and every telco in the world) making crazy money!! is there any alternative? yes definitely, there is this group of business persons position as Alternative Mobile Service Providers (AMSP) that will be extra helpful for those travel often.

  9. I called maxis this evening to clear my doubts. It seems maxis have even pulled out the FUP 3k minutes & sms with 2gb data. So its now “officially” limitless or unlimited to make calls & sms to all networks on 128 plan. I even went and did the port in. RM128 advance payment, non-contract. Too good to be true but its true :)

    • Hi burn, thanks for the info! Yes, Maxis indeed quietly updated the plan and now it is truly limitless. Great!

In respect of the voice & SMS allocated with the Plan, the Customer/Participant acknowledges and accepts that:

      a. The Limitless minutes and SMS’ applies to:
      i. Domestic mobile ON-net usage for MaxisONEâ„¢ plan lite (Excluding OFF-net calls, calls to fixed lines, video calls, calls to special numbers, calls to 1-300/1-800 numbers & calls to 121 number)
ii. Domestic mobile/fixed ON-net & OFF-net usage for MaxisONEâ„¢ plan (Excluding , video calls, calls to special numbers, calls to 1-300/1-800 numbers & calls to 121 number)

      b. For any excessive usage or on suspicion of fraud or any illegal practice or unusual activity in respect of the Customer’s/Participant’s Account with MMSSB, MMSSB at its sole and absolute discretion reserves the right at any time, without being liable to the Customer/Participant’s or any third party to discontinue, disconnect, interrupt, bar or suspend the service for such period of time as we deem fit.

  10. Hi i a very less caller & sms user but going to need gps for my work start next month .. so which plan you think i should get using maxis ?? Or some other service provider like Digi actually provide better offer ??
    Thanks first.

  11. Bro – please get your info correct. There are “no limit” for your calls and sms.

    normal voice call – Limitless
    SMS – Limitless

    video calls – Pay
    MMS – pay

  12. hi, maybe this quite late but you did a really good job. as we the consumers starting to shout, they (provider) will be scared. hehe. fyi, im overseas student and have no idea about this maxis one plan thing until now. tq for you article now i know what maxis did to us..

  13. Great article! And the update!

Im on maxis one plan. The plan works for me until i quite my job. Since i have unlimited data unifi at home and dont need to call anyone as much as before, this one plan is killing me!! I once ask at maxis exclusive provider on how can i terminate the contract she said i may need to pay rm1k. Do u know the termination procedures? How to calculate the penalty etc?

    Tq ,,,,,,,,,

  14. i have called and checked with Maxis. They confirmed that when Maxis One Plan was launched in May 2014, it is capped at 3000 minutes of call and 3000 text messages. But with the launch of the new iPhone 6/6+ plan with the new Maxis One Plan, it is indeed, unlimited call and unlimited texts to all network.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Maxis, just someone who is using Maxis line at the moment.

  15. I just called Maxis center. Currently I am using Plan 78 to upgrade to plan 128 I need to pay penalty of Rm750 and contract premature termination also RM 750. What the hell? I can’t see this term and condition in their website. Regret of choosing Maxis.

    • I see you signed up a contract plan. I don’t see why upgrade plan will get penalty. That’s bad. :(

How many months left for your Maxis contract? Maybe you want to wait a while before upgrade.

  16. I really think the plan is kinda expensive as compared to Celcom la…for RM78 u only get 1 GB quota and thats the cheapest plan…. seriously???? Celcom’s First plan the lowest one RM38 also get like 3G data dy lorrr…

  17. Hi bro. Does Maxis One Plan RM128 comes with home internet 10mbp and hp 4G?
TM Net currently offers me an upgrade for my home internet Streamyx to 4 mpb for RM110.
And I am using prepaid 1GB with limited free calls and sms at RM30 per month.

If Maxis One Plan RM128 include home internet and hp 4G, then it will be worth it for me to change to Maxis.

  18. Eventhough the plan is “worth it”…..Limitless means no limit. The meaning of the word itself is quite clear cut, I think. By using the word and then putting a limit on use is pure bullshit. This is clearly false advertising which means they are misleading the customers. That is clearly cheating. I don’t understand how our government can allow this kind of thing to go on. I believe we would have laws that state that this kind of situation, where misleading advertising is being carried out, is actually breaking a law. Maybe it is because no one reported them to the appropriate authorities? But, I do believe there would not be any need for anyone to put in a report/complaint as these plans are widely advertised. I believe they(some of the authorities) could be users themselves too. Any dumbass would and should be able recognise this as bullshit. But, knowing we have mostly incompetent people working or maybe they are just too corrupted, then we (the end users) are forever doomed. Basically, customers are not being offered a “fair” deal as asvertised.
Pheww, feeling a bit better now. Just had to get that off my chest.

  19. If you are on maxisone 128 plan when you sms another maxis user who is overseas that person will not receive your sms. My brother is on this rm128 plan and from the day he signed up his sms to me living in Australia had failed to arrive on my roaming maxis phone. Then I got my sister in law to sms me using her prepaid maxis…and her sms came. Can someone explain why? Maxis is not transparent enough in their terms and conditions. It is most annoying you can’t get the information anywhere in the net. Please maxis exercise open disclosure to allyour users and make your site user friendly.

  20. I am using maxisone 128 plan, for 2 months now, I subscribed this service in kl, at first i only found that when i need to check my location in google map, it takes years to move and search, second things, two weeks ago i went back to my home town Gopeng, tried to use the hot spot for my laptop, then only i found that it is not working at all, even making normal call also not clear. Compare umoblie, i used before, i can open hot spot for 1 laptop and 2 tabs and still working smoothly.
I complained to their customer service and i told them i want to terminate the plan, and i didn’t take their phone that bind for 2 years contract, but they told me i still bound by their contract and must use for 6 months then i only i can terminate it,
So, i just want to know is this true or not?

  21. One more experience to share here, i am in real estate line, the limitless that they saying is really lies….In our line we send a lot of sms to customer base to get customer leads, just bcos of their limitless sms, we subscribed their plan, but just in this months 2 of our HARDWORKING colleague were barred by them already, can not use the line at all, reason is they sent too many sms…. they are really cheating on the consumer…

    • @derek foo: yes, that’s true. the fine print of Maxis ONE plan stated that:

7b. The Plan(s) Limitless minutes and SMS’ are for standard person-to-person calls or texts. It is meant for your use to talk or to use your fingers to text to another person. It is NOT meant for multiple simultaneous calling, conference calling, re-supply, call centre usage, telemarketing, bulk messaging, application-to-person communication, continuously call forwarding, auto-dialling, machine-to-machine communication (including by using your SIM card in any other devices), Cellular Trunking Units (CTUs), or any other activity that MMSSB considers to be non-standard usage.

Read also my another article: Compare 7GB Postpaid Plans: U Mobile P70 vs. Maxis ONE Plan 188

  22. I should have read ur blog before I signed up this one I wanted to early termination of contract and there is no way be seen in term and condition so the possibility for me to get conned is high..

  23. I recommend XOX postpaid plans. Good nationwide coverage, 4G LTE, just nice packages to choose based on needs. Can generate income as well… love it
