Zenfone 5 vs. Zenfone 4

ASUS Zenfone 5 (RM599) is 2 times more expensive than Zenfone 4 (RM299), does it worth the extra money? Let’s compare Zenfone 5 vs. Zenfone 4:

ASUS Zenfone 5 vs. Zenfone 4
ASUS Zenfone 5 vs. Zenfone 4

Zenfone 5 wins Zenfone 4 in almost every specification, except that they have same Android version and same Micro SD card slot capacity. You pay RM300 more for Zenfone 5’s 2GB RAM, better display, better cameras, and double battery capacity.

Thoughts

Unless you cannot afford RM600 for a smartphone, you should gift yourselves a better performance smartphone.

Zenfone 5 is your affordable general usage smartphone.

While Zenfone 4 is the smartphone for first timer who upgrade from dumb feature phone, Zenfone 5 is your affordable daily usage smartphone.

For RM599, ASUS Zenfone 5’s main competitors would be the Xiaomi Redmi 1S (RM419) and Huawei Honor 3C (RM499).

They have similar specs but using 3 different mobile processor brands – Intel, Qualcomm, Mediatek – respectively. Redmi 1S and Honor 3C are cheaper but they are only available online for limited stock (you need luck and technique to buy them).

ZenFone 4, RM300 Android Smartphone by ASUS Malaysia

Not everyone has the luxury to buy expensive flagship smartphone. Some of us only need a cheap smartphone that works.

We heard a lot of nightmares about cheap smartphones that are difficult to use and do not last for a few months.

Could we have a branded, cheap, and reliable smartphone? ASUS ZenFone 4 may be your answer.

ASUS ZenFone 4 phone price is not RM600, not RM400… It is only RM299! It is the ASUS’s most budget Android phone released in early 2014.

Unbelievable? Let’s check out the phone’s specs.

Specs

ZenFone 4 has a 4-inch (800×480) display using Corning Gorilla Glass 3 (anti-scratch). It is powered by 1.2GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2520 processor and 1GB RAM.

The phone uses Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (upgradeable to Android 4.4 Kitkat) with ASUS ZenUI.

ZenFone 4 has 5MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera. 8GB on phone storage, plus supports microSD card up to 64GB. You will also receive free-for-life 5GB ASUS WebStorage.

ZenFone 4 supports Dual SIM Dual Standby. The removable battery’s capacity is 1200 mAh. The phone is only 115 gram.

Features

ZenFone 4 uses vibrant colours for the phone case, the back cover is curved shape. The design is simple and stylish. (based on the product photos)

The new ASUS ZenUI user interface aims to “turn complexity into simplicity”. The UI is flat and clean. It has productivity features like “What’s Next” and “Do It Later” for busy persons.

PixelMaster is ASUS technology for smartphone to produces high quality photos. It has low-light mode, image stabilizer, easy head count selfies, depth of field photo, object focus tracking and more.

Price and Availability

ASUS ZenFone 4 is available now at Malaysia retail stores for RM299 in Red, White, Black colours.

Thoughts

ZenFone 4 display is not sharp but still better than many do-not-come-from-where phones. Intel Atom 1.2GHz dual core processor and 1GB RAM can handle general tasks and apps. I won’t play 3D game on ZenFone 4, though.

0.3 megapixel front camera cannot take your selfie photos. Dual SIM and productivity features of Zen UI make it a budget work phone, but the 1200 mAh battery capacity means you need a spare battery or power bank.

If ZenFone 4 has kids friendly features (parental controls, kids theme, tracking, etc) then many parents would buy the RM299 phone for their children in school.

In January 2013, ASUS Malaysia launched 3 new products — ASUS TAICHI dual-screen Windows 8 convertible, VivoTab Smart Windows 8 tablet, and MeMO Pad 7-inch Android tablet. Read on to find the the specs, price and my first impressions of the products.

ASUS TAICHI

ASUS TAICHI is the world’s first dual-screen Windows 8 convertible. The back-to-back 11.6-inch screens both have 1920×1080 pixels. The back screen is 10 point touch screen, while front screen is not touch-enabled.

With the unique TAICHI button on the keyboard, you can switch ASUS TAICHI in 4 display modes:

  1. Notebook mode — works like notebook, back screen is off.
  2. Tablet mode — close the lid and TAICHI becomes a tablet.
  3. Mirror mode — both screens display the same content.
  4. Dual-screen mode — display different content on each screen, as if the back screen is an external monitor.

There’s also a “screen lock” switch at the side of the notebook to turn off the tablet display.

Frankly, I don’t see how two back-to-back screen would be useful. And that unique feature add weight and size and cost to the notebook. The concept sounds cool but less practical.

Specs

  • Intel Core i5 processor
  • tablet screen: 11.6” Full HD (1920×1080) with 10 point touch
  • notebook screen: 11.6” Full HD (1920×1080)

ASUS VivoTab Smart does not comes with keyboard dock nor stand. You can complete it with TransBoard wireless keyboard (RM249) and TransSleeve Cover (RM169).

Since there is no sign of Microsoft’s Surface Pro coming to Malaysia, you may consider ASUS VivoTab Smart as a cheaper Windows 8 tablet that support all PC hardware and Windows desktop software.
