Example: You top-up RM5 for 5-day active period. You will automatically receive free 1GB mobile Internet for 30 days. You can use the 1GB data in the 5 days of active period. After 5 days, you can top-up again to use remaining Internet quota (if any) in 30 days.

The 1GB Internet quota will automatically be refreshed every 30 days. You cannot carry forward unused quota.

You may purchase any U Mobile’s Unlimited Mobile Internet (UMI) or Mobile Booster (MB) plans to enjoy more Internet data.

Free Basic Internet

U Mobile POWER Prepaid includes free basic Internet with speed up to 64kbps. The slow Internet allows you to stay online to receive/send instant text messages.

Switch U Mobile prepaid plan

Existing U Mobile prepaid customers can switch to POWER prepaid plan with one-time RM3 switching fee starting on August 5th, 2015. Simply dial *118*6*2*3# or SMS MIG POWER to 28118

Power Prepaid (1GB) vs. U28 Postpaid (3GB)

No doubt that U Mobile Power Prepaid free 1GB mobile Internet is more generous than other telcos’ prepaid plans. It is a good deal if you live in the telco’s coverage area. We can’t help but want to compare it with U Mobile’s own recently launched U28 Postpaid Plan.

U28 Postpaid

You pay an RM28 monthly fee for U28 with 3GB data quota, 50 minutes free voice call and free 100 SMS(U Mobile) and free 200 SMS(other networks). You would also like free 50MB daily roaming data when you are not in Malaysia.

The call rate is more expensive than POWER Prepaid Plan — 9 Sen (U Mobile) and 10 sen (other networks) for 30 seconds.

POWER Prepaid

If you top-up RM30 for POWER prepaid plan, you will get free 1GB data quota and 450 minutes U Mobile call minutes for a month.

Don’t forget, you still have RM30 credit to buy UMI or MB plan for more Internet data or call minutes.

Conclusion

At a glance, POWER prepaid is more flexible with free data quota, more free call minutes, lower call/SMS rates, and credit to buy add-ons. But, the free call minutes is limited to 15 minutes per day. Buy RM30 UMI30 and you only get a total of 2.5GB data quota (Free 1GB + UMI30 1.5GB).

Do you want more Internet data or make more U mobile voice calls? As my friend said, few people make calls and SMS these days.

U Mobile POWER prepaid would be my second mobile line because it does not require monthly commitment. I simply top-up few bucks whenever I want to use its free data/calls.

If you are an active mobile Internet user, forget about U Mobile Power Prepaid. You should switch to U Mobile U28 postpaid plan instead.

Google Photos: Free Unlimited Storage for Photos and Videos

Google Photos
Google Photos
Google Photos

In case you do not know. Google+ Photos allows unlimited photos and videos upload to Google Drive cloud storage. I have been using Google+ Photos to automatically backup photos in my smartphone but it only stores photos with resolution up to 2048 x 2048 pixels or videos not longer than 15 minutes. Higher resolution photo and long video will be automatically resized, or count to your Google Drive storage space if you want to store in original full-size photos and videos.

4MP resolution is fine for online sharing, but doesn’t you like FREE Unlimited auto backup for your high resolution photos & videos? Now You Can!

New Google Photos (without the “+”) standalone product has been announced at Google I/O 2015. Google Photos gives you unlimited online storage for all your photos and videos, auto organize and allows you to easily share them to anyone.

Upgrade from Google+ Photos, Google Photos now stores unlimited photos with resolution up to 16MP and 1080p Full HD videos. Higher resolution photos and videos will still be auto compressed.

You may choose “Original” storage size to backup your higher resolution (greater than 16MP or 1080p) photos and videos in their original file size to maintain exact quality.

A comparison between Original and High quality storage size shows that Google Photos has a rather good image compression technology that I do not notice the difference between two samples.

Google Photos compression

Besides backup and store your files, Google Photo also automatically organizes your memories by people, places, and things that matter.

You do not need to tag or label them. You do not need to create photo albums. All you need to do is do a simple search to find any photo. Example: search “dogs” and Google Photos will show you all of your dog photos. Magic!

Google Photos search
Google Photos search

Google Photos can auto enhance your photos for the best look. You can create photo collages, animations, movies and more in the app. Swipe left to open Assistant view, where Google Photos automatically creates a collage or a story based on the photos and videos you took in a recent trip.

Google Photos Assistant

It is easier to share your photos and videos now with Google Photos. Besides sharing via other apps, you can now create a link to share multiple photos and videos or album. Recipients of your share link do not need to install an app or login, they can save your images in their own Google Photos with a single tap.

Google Photos is now available on Android, iOS and web. (rolling out… yet available in Malaysia at writing)

Here’s What Maxis Do NOT Tell You about Maxis ONE Plan

shh
(Image: modesty by Lexie Lannom, on Flickr)

MaxisONE plan is the new Maxis postpaid plan launched on 30 May 2014. The Internet plans offer free calls, free SMS, and flat rate data roaming.

“It is the only internet plan that offers limitless talk and text, an ‘Always On’ internet experience and worry-free roaming.”, say Maxis.

The plan looks great but there are some hidden information you may want to know before subscribing. Read on to know what Maxis not telling you openly.

[box type=”info”]Update: Maxis ONE plan with UNLIMITED Calls and SMS, for Real[/box]

What Maxis tell you

MaxisONE banner

Two MaxisONE plans are available: MaxisONE plan lite (RM78) and MaxisONE plan (RM128).

Maxis ONE plan lite

  • Limitless calls to all Maxis/Hotlink numbers
  • Limitless SMS to all Maxis/Hotlink numbers
  • 1GB monthly data quota
  • No extra charges after data quota
  • One flat rate data roaming in 106 countries (RM38/day)

MaxisONE plan

  • Limitless calls to all networks (including fixed line)
  • Limitless SMS to all networks
  • 2GB monthly data quota
  • Data quota is upgradable up to 6GB for RM30/GB/month
  • No extra charges after data quota
  • One flat rate data roaming in 106 countries (RM38/day)

You can temporary increase data quota with purchase of Data Boost. It is one-time fee and non auto-renewal.

Maxis offer three smartphones with both MaxisONE plans: Huawei Y530, HTC One M8, Samsung Galaxy S5.

What Maxis do not tell you…

1. Limited Limitless

“Limitless talk and text” means “unlimited call and SMS”, right? Wrong.

Though Maxis uses “limitless” in the postpaid plan, it actually has a FUP (Fair Use Policy) of 3,000 minutes call and 3,000 SMS per month.

Yes, 3000 minutes and 3000 SMS are a lot, still it is not all-you-can-talk/text plan. It is about one and half hour call and 100 SMS per day.

[Tweet “MaxisONE plan is NOT all-you-can-talk/text plan”]

After exceeded the monthly bundle (3000 minutes and 3000 SMS), you will have to pay per use:

  • MaxisONE plan lite: RM0.15 per minute and RM0.10 per SMS (all networks)
  • MaxisONE plan: RM0.10 Maxis/Hotlink call and SMS, RM0.15 other networks call and SMS.

2. ‘Always On’ Internet is not usable

Maxis does not charge you after used up all data quota, but your mobile connection speed will drop to a slow speed. The data speed is so slow that you will pull off all your hair and pay for data boosters.

3. More smartphones with Maxis ONE plan

Besides the already told MaxisONE plan with Huawei Y530 (free), HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5, Maxis also offer the following smartphones:

  • Sony Xperia Z2
  • Sony Xperia M2
  • Xiaomi Mi3
  • HTC Desire 816
  • HTC Desire 310 (free)
  • Huawei Y330 (free)

All smartphone with MaxisONE plan is tied to 24 month (2 years) contract.

4. Flat rate data roaming with quota

The RM38 per day flat rate data roaming in 106 countries is subject to Fair Usage Policy. Meaning, it has a data quota limit. Do not dream to download movies while you are using data roaming.

Maxis have not tell what is the data quota limit. I guess it depends on the local telco you are visiting.

Anyhow, if exceeding the unknown fair usage limit, your mobile Internet speed will be very very slow. You can purchase another data roaming pass (RM38) to recover the Internet speed.

You would not be charged for exceeding data roaming quota limit, however.

5. Other charges

Though not sure why you still use these on smartphone, anyway, there are charges for video calls and MMS. 1 minute video call will charge you 15 sen (on-net) or 40 sen (off-net). Each MMS is 25 sen (on-net) and 50 sen (off-net).

MaxisONE plan in details

Here I made a table better showing MaxisONE plan structure:

Maxis ONE plan details

Thoughts

When you use the words “FREE” and “Limitless”, I am expecting “free and unlimited”. Yes, I know it would be too good to be true and not practicable in business.

Please do not shout “limitless” when it has limit (FUP).

MaxisONE plan is best for smartphone users who talk and text a lot. If you talk and text less, check out Maxis TalkMore plans. If you consume Internet data more than you call & SMS, use Maxis SurfMore plans.

Take note that MaxisONE plan lite’s free talk and text is only Maxis network. Unless all your family, friends, and customers are on Maxis network, MaxisONE plan lite might give you bill shock.

What do you think about MaxisONE plan? Please comment and Share this with your family and friends.
