ASUS ZenFone Selfie has been launched in Malaysia at the end of August 2015. The new Android smartphone equipped with 13MP front camera with flash. How does it compare with ASUS ZenFone 2? Let’s find out in this article.

ASUS ZenFone Selfie design is same as the company’s 2015 flagship smartphone — ZenFone 2, except that you will notice a big front camera on ZenFone Selfie at first glance, and that explain its name.

ZenFone Selfie’s rear and front cameras are both 13MP resolution. The rear camera has laser focus for fast autofocus. The front camera is 13MP with dual-tone flash — a great upgrade from ZenFone 2’s 5MP front-camera.

Thanks to the laser focus, ZenFone Selfie camera focus is a lot faster than ZenFone 2. Saving camera shoot is also faster, comparing to ZenFone 2 which could take up to 1-2 seconds to save a photo.

ZenFone Selfie display is same 5.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) but uses Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is 2x more drop-damage resistance than Corning Gorilla Glass 3 used on ZenFone 2.

ASUS drops Intel Atom processor and uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor in ZenFone Selfie. It has 3GB RAM, 1GB less than ZenFone 2. Only 32GB storage model is available, supporting microSD memory card up to 128GB.

Both ZenFone Selfie and ZenFone 2 supports Dual SIM cards, but the latter only allows mobile data from 1 SIM slot. ZenFone Selfie is Dual-SIM-Dual-Standby, support 3G/4G networks on both SIM slots (only one SIM card can connect to 3G/4G at a time).

Both ZenFone 2 and ZenFone Selfie are using 3000 mAh Li-Polymer battery, but we expect Qualcomm Snapdragon processor to be more battery efficiency — longer battery life.

ZenFone Selfie price in Malaysia is RM 1,049 and available in 3 lovely colours: Pure White, Chic Pink, Aqua Blue.

Conclusion

I recommend ZenFone Selfie over ZenFone 2, the former is a welcome upgrade from the already good ZenFone 2.

ZenFone Selfie has better front & back cameras, tougher glass, and supports Dual 4G SIMs. These features are more important and useful than 4GB RAM in your daily phone usage. Also, I bet you will hardly notice the difference between 3GB and 4GB phone memory.

Plus, ZenFone Selfie is RM150 cheaper than ZenFone 2!

HTC One E9+ has been launched in Malaysia on 30 July 2015, priced under RM2K and available in shining gold colour. Check out my hands-on first impression and phone specifications.

If you cannot afford HTC One M flagship series (HTC One M9+ in 2015), then the HTC One E series is the affordable choice with similar specifications.

E9+ has similar flagship design as HTC One M9+. The golden metal frame gives it a luxury feel. The non-removable back cover is not metal nor glass, but a plastic with a smooth touch.

The 20 mega pixel rear camera bulge with golden ring is standing out from the smooth surface at the very top of the phone.

At the front, you get the 5.5-inch 2K WQHD (1440×2560 pixel) display, dual front-facing speakers with HTC Boom Sound, and HTC UltraPixel front camera.

Both rear 20MP camera and UltraPixel front camera are using the same camera sensor as HTC One M9+.

The volume rocker and the power button is at the right side. Don’t need to stretch your finger to reach the power button.

Dual SIM & microSD card slots are under a long cap at the left side of the phone.

Thought

Overall, I am impressed by HTC One E9+ design and build. It is sleek and elegant with a luxury feel (GOLD!). It has smooth performance during my hands-on period. I will need to do a detail phone review to reveal its real life daily performance.

I think RM1900 for a like-flagship smartphone is expensive. We have many choices under RM1500 in the market now… What do you think?

This is #HTC E9+ in #LiewCF hand. Nice build, though not metal. RM1,899 in Malaysia.

Xiaomi launches their most beautiful flagship Mi Note in Malaysia

Malaysia Mi Note Launch -- Steve & Louis

Xiaomi, China’s leading smartphone company who believes that high-quality technology doesn’t need to cost a fortune, is living up to its promise by giving Malaysians a chance to own a stunning 5.7 inch full HD display, 64 GB Mi Note at a very affordable price.

Malaysia Mi Note Launch -- Steve & Louis
Steve Vickers (General Manager, Xiaomi Southeast Asia) and Louis Shue (Product Manager for Xiaomi in Malaysia and Singapore)

Steve Vickers, General Manager, Xiaomi Southeast Asia, said, “We are truly excited to bring Mi Note, Xiaomi’s most beautifully designed flagship to Malaysia. We believe that Mi fans in Malaysia will appreciate such high-quality innovation made available to them at an incredible price.”

Before we dive in on the design and performance, Vickers shared what some of the tech critiques have to say:

Premium with a touch of glass

Mi Note front view
Mi Note front view

Mi Note’s 3D back panel is crafted from Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and has a curved ergonomic shape with aluminium frame. The trend now is for curved edges and Mi Note has this as well. The rounded edged are added to the 2.5D front panel, extending the smoothness from back to the front. This gives you a better grip of the smartphone.

During the launch, two demo videos were shown to test the durability of the glass. Needless to say, Mi Note survived the metal ball drop and drop test with glass in tact and not a scratch on its ultra-thin 6.95mm frame.

Mi Note’s 5.7” Sharp full HD display has an incredible contrast ratio of 1400:1, delivers richer colours and crystal-clear view for a spectacular viewing experience even under harsh sunlight thanks to Xiaomi’s Sunlight Display Technology.

Built for performance

This sleek beauty is fitted with a 3,000mAh Sony/LG 4.4V high-density Li-ion battery. It also comes with Quick Charge 2.0 which means it charges 75% faster than conventional methods. To meet the needs of heavy users, Mi Note runs on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz processor and 3GB LPDDR3 RAM. LPDDR is a type of double data rate synchronous DRAM for mobile computers.

Trigger happy folks

The 13MP rear camera that comes with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) will ensure no blurry images. One point to note is that the OIS is not protruding and is flat, which gives the smartphone a sleek look. The 4MP front camera with 2-micron large pixels which is 40% larger than other average camera, is best for selfies and even comes with a Beautify mode, which intelligently guesses a person’s age and gender in order to apply 36 smart filters.

Staying connected

Instead of carrying two smartphones, you can now manage calls and messages on two separate SIM cards with Mi Note’s 4G dual SIM, dual standby that fits micro and nano SIMs. Users are able to tailor preferred network and data settings for each card with intelligent dual SIM features, like creating custom SIM labels. Mi Note also automatically selects which SIM to use when you call or text someone based on history.

For the love of music

Mi Note is packed with a professional Hi-Fi audio system for minimal-loss, studio-grade sound quality. It has a dedicated sound card for 24-bit/192KHz lossless playback support and a unique two-stage amplifier to ensure a high degree of quality when using headphones with levels as high as 600 ohms.

Force to be reckoned with

Having sold 34.7 million smartphones in the first half of 2015, up by 33% year-on-year sales, Xiaomi is a company to be reckoned with. One of Wired’s headline, “Xiaomi’s great new phone is a lot like iPhone. Apple should take note”. Xiaomi is certainly moving in the right direction to collaborate closely with leading world-class suppliers like Corning, Qualcomm and Sharp for the Mi Note.

Finally…

HAPPY FIRST ANNIVERSARY to Mi Malaysia!

Launched end May 2014, Mi Malaysia has their own Mi fan club. Here’s a photo of them excitedly showing off the Mi Note at the recent launch in KL.
