I killed My Linksys WRT54G WiFi Router!

My Linksys WRT54G WiFi router is not functioning after working for half month without any rest!

This afternoon, my Internet connection went down suddenly, while I was chatting with my cough net friends. My brother found that router lights were off even though the power was switched on.

I sensed something wrong…

I checked the power adapter. Ough! It was HOT! I replaced the Linksys power adapter with a modem’s power adapter (same input/output power). The router was on but the power light is flashing.

So, the Linksys power adapter died due to overheat. And the router was also half death, may have been caused by unstable currents from the spoiled power adapter.

I read it in the Linksys documentation that if the power light is flashing, it can be fixed by updating its firmware. Well, I am not going to do that. Since the power adapter is malfunctioning already, I might as well claim warranty and replace both of them.

Well, I will probably visit Kuala Lumpur soon to replace the Linksys WRT54G WiFi router. It has three years warranty, anyway.

My two cents

We were treating the Linksys router too cruelly… Lesson learned: “Hardware needs to rest too.”

  1. My router has been running 24/7 for 2 years.. with less than 10 days for rest in between.. still working like new.

There is probably something wrong with the router (or adapter) itself.

  2. Phewwww luckily mine doesn’t have any problem for Linksys but sometimes the wireless light just GONE without any reason. I have to power off and on again to get it going. If i on my aircon, then the wifi will be fine for few dys if i open my window and the sun shine on it, the wireless will stop functioning …. heating is one of the problem for linksys i guess

  4. @investor: wrt54g can be used in house with downstair and upstair without any repeater (like my house). Read my Linksys WRT54G WiFi router review. The WiFi is an International standard, so it is compatible wherever u buy it.

  5. I’m using the same model also … without any problem… manybe you should stop download so many porn movie give the router a rest. Normal surfing and gaming This cute baby should be able to handle it…

  6. @Albert: It is because my brother plays online game from night to morning, then I online from morning till night… so, it is non-stop working. Don’t assume everyone use broadband to download movies. :)

  7. investor: Belkin wireless Pre-N router is a nice gadget. I love to buy that one too. It comes with three antenna rite . Some with two antenna only and the signal could go for 600m outdoor and 300m indoor. It’s a nice piece of gadget

  9. Currently, I own a D-Link but my friend wants to buy a new wireless router. We went to MV to enquire.

    Most shops recommended Belkin.
    1 shop recommended D-Link.

Then I asked why not Linksys?
The shop said warranty for replacement takes 2 months.

  10. My linksys wifi reuter (type B) works well except once or twice in a month, the connection will stop working and I will have to switch off and on again to make it works.

My problem is I have forgotten the Admin password of my Linksys Wifi Reuter. If my PC down and that I have to reset everything in my PC, I will have problem. Not sure whether there is an easy way to retreive back the password or reset the reuter.

  11. i think if adapter spoiled we can always get a new one within price of 20 ringgit .. if you stay at kl you can get a cheap adapter at jalan pasar pudu.

last few month all my adapter for all device spoil and burned because of the TNB voltage problem, (not sure why but some of my neighbour electrical devices also burned). i have purchase 3 of the adapter from jalan pudu as replace. Luckily the devices all still working or else i ended buying all my router and switch again.

when i call to complain at TNB they denied the problem but offer an apologies.

  12. Due to the fact that Linksys router is consider very good, I have run that for many year and never have no problem. I never turn off. I so sorry yours is death : (
