During the BlackBerry Live event in Orlando, Florida, BlackBerry announced their plan to make BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) available to competitive mobile platforms in Summer 2013.

About BBM

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is the default instant messenger for BlackBerry devices using BlackBerry PIN. It can send messages, group chat, pictures, files, audio recording, voice call (video calls for BlackBerry 10), etc over the WiFi or mobile network.

BBM now has more than 60 million monthly active users who send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day.

BBM for Android and iOS

Upon release of BBM for Android and iOS (iPhone, iPad), BBM users would be able to connect with their family, friends, colleagues on BlackBerry, iOS and Android platforms. The invites are two-way opt-in to control who can add you.

Users can add BBM contacts through PIN, Email, SMS or QR code scan, as well as connect using compatible NFC-capable smartphone (BlackBerry and Android).

If approved by Apple App Store and Google Play, BBM will be available as a free download and support iOS 6 and Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher.
