The ultracompact Canon PowerShot S95 may be small in stature, but certainly not in picture quality. Shooting at 10 megapixels with 720p video, the PowerShot S95 features a wide aperture worthy of full-sized 35 mm cameras and digital/manual hybrids.

In an age of digital cameras with automatic everything, it’s refreshing to encounter a unit with as much versatility in manual controls as it possesses in automated features. It’s especially gratifying to find such manual dexterity in a compact point-and-shooter.

These manually controllable settings include an adjustable shutter speed, exposure compensation, ISO sensitivity, stepped zoom, and of course manual focus, as well as something called i-Contrast, which basically controls the aspect ratio.

Additionally, users can control these functions independently of whichever shooting mode to which they’ve set the digital compact camera. What’s more, besides the usual smattering of standard scene modes and most-used manual controls on the top dial, Canon has added the ability for users to set their favorite custom manual settings for quicker and easier access.

This makes it a perfect secondary camera for photographers wishing for more control over the pictures their pocket camera can take and a perfect starter camera for amateur and budding professional photographers not quite ready, willing, or able to upgrade to a full-sized, fully manual device.

In addition to the new and improved 720p video capture, the S95 adds to the unit’s popular predecessor, the Canon PowerShot S90, better image stabilization, which can be essential for shooting moving objects, shooting while in motion, and hand-held photography.

With exceptionally bright and vivid color saturation, the S95 produces superior JPEG photos, cleaner and clearer than most other compact digital cameras, bolstered by a bright, sharp lens and consistent metering and exposure.

The Canon PowerShot S95 is housed in a body that is eminently supportive of the manually dexterity the unit brings to ultracompact digital photography. Not only is it lightweight and small enough to fit in a pocket, but it is sufficiently ergonomic to hold with comfort and operate with ease.
