Comment Spams On WordPress

Recently start receiving comment spams at LcF Weblog. Those are non topic related comments with full of external links. Since the condition is not so serious, only few comment spams per week, I choose to delete them normally.

There are few ways to deal with comment spam for WordPress(WP) user:

Comment Moderation
WP has an option for you to moderate every comment for your post. Only approved comments will be displayed. It is disabled by default. To switch on comment moderation, login WP -> Options -> General Blog Settings, then set comment_moderation to manual.

Auto Shut Off Comments
Turn the comment option off for stale post. Example: all post older than 30 days will not allowed to post new comment. There are two (here and here) auto shut off comment hacks available in WPHacks.

Pro : set-and-forget-it solution.
Con : new visitor cannot comment on old posts.

WP Blacklist Comment SPAM Filteration
This is WP version of Movabletype’s MT-BlackList plugin. It filters the comment spam that match the blacklist. Download here.

Pro : more complete solution to deal with comment spam
Con : beginners may have difficulty to install.

Note: In just released WordPress 1.2, it included new comment moderation and spam comments filters to deal with comment spam!
