No More Free Google Apps, Alternative Solutions Found!

No Free Google Apps

Google has killed the free Google Apps for your own custom domain. Available plans now are Google Apps for Business ($50/user/year) or Google Apps for Education (Free). Existing Free Google Apps users are not affected, Google do not charge them now.

Google Apps is a cloud-based productivity suite that helps you and your team connect and get work done from anywhere on any device.

With USD$50 per year, you get 25GB Gmail inbox size, 5GB Google Drive storage, 24/7 customer support and 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Can we cheat?

If you are thinking what I am thinking… No, you can’t cheat Google that you are applying Google Apps for Education. Google will verify your claim before approve your free Google apps account.

From 200 to 0

Google Apps was first launched to allow 200 free users, then it shortly changed to 100 users limit. In January 2009, the cap changed to 50 users. In 2011, Google further reduced the limit to 10 users. Now, on December 6, 2012, Google discontinue Google Apps Free Edition. (source: Wikipedia)

Alternative solutions

Don’t want to pay Google? Only want Gmail for your own domain? Here’s workaround.

You could apply a free Gmail account and use Mail Fetcher to pull emails from your domain’s mail hosting account and setup Gmail account to pretend that the email is sending from your domain name.

If you don’t mind using non-Gmail service, you can use or Zoho Mail with your own domain. Both are still offering free account.

Life after Free Google Apps

I have been using Google Apps Free Edition for years, mainly Gmail with custom domain, and I can’t live without it now.

Though Google don’t take my money for now, I will still pay USD$50/year for the service, if Google would charge existing free Google Apps users in the future.

However, I won’t apply Google Apps for my future new domains. I will check out Microsoft’s for own domain instead.

  1. You have Zoho apps which are pretty good too.. They are still free for up to 3 users with 5 GB of storage each – and you can use
