Stolen Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in Malaysia

There were 1407 unit of Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (all Marble White) stolen from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The stolen units, total worth RM3.23 million, may selling in the market at a cheap price tag.

Malaysia police have busted a gang involved in the crime, arrested 13 suspects but only 71 units of the stolen Note 2 have recovered. 1336 units are still in the wild.

The stolen Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will not be cover by warranty. And, buying or keeping a stolen unit is a crime. There are few ways to identify if a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is one of the 1407 stolen units or not.

First of all, make sure you check for SIRIM sticker and Samsung Warranty sticker before buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in Malaysia.

Next, since the stickers could be fake, we need to check the unique IMEI number of a Galaxy Note 2.

[box type=info]IMEI number can be found under Android phone’s Settings > About Phone > Status.[/box]

Samsung Malaysia Electronic have sent an email to all distributors with all the IMEI numbers of the 1407 stolen units. You could check the IMEI number online by referring to this excel file.

Some Malaysian web developers have developed “Stolen Samsung Galaxy Note 2 IMEI Search Engine” to make the IMEI search easier. You can try here and here.

Since the IMEI numbers are available, I think Malaysia telcos should blacklist all the 1407 stolen units (yes, it could be done by blocking IMEI number). Anyway, the stolen units may also be sell into other countries…

Be extra careful when you found a product selling lower than the market price. “When it is too good to be truth, then it is.”
