The New Apple iMac

Apple unveiled the new iMac at August 7, 2007. The new iMac is thinner than previous version and its display encased in aluminum and glass enclosure.

The whole new iMac line is using Intel Core 2 Duo processors, new ultra-slim aluminum Apple keyboard, build-in iSight video camera and iLife `08 (new version of iLife).

Cheaper iMac

The good news is that the new iMac is cheaper than previous models! The 20-inch iMac now starts at just $1,199, $300 less than the previous 20-inch model, and the 24-inch iMac starts at just $1,799, $200 less than the previous 24-inch model.

New iMac price in Malaysia?

Generally, Malaysians need to pay more for Apple products. The previous white 24-inch iMac was RM7,799 (~$2,257 USD), which U.S can get at $1,999 USD. For the new 24-inch iMac, I think it will be around RM7,000. The 20-inch 2.0GHz should be around RM4,999.

Well, these are my wild guess. The official new iMac prices are not available in Malaysia yet when blogging.

Should you get a Mac?

As an Apple ibook user for about 2 years, I would suggest Macs for new computer users (your children?). Completed with operating system and softwares, a Mac computer really works out of the box. That’s what Apple always proud about too.

Plus, Mac OS X is a great operating system. Mac user seldom needs to worry about security and computer stability problem. The coming soon (Oct 07) Mac OS X Leopard is even greater.

However, existing Windows users should consider carefully before switching to Mac. Softwares build for Windows does not work on Mac. You will need to get alternative Mac softwares you are using on Windows.

For instant messaging lovers, Mac version of IM softwares are not as fancy as Windows version, eventhough they still work fine as IM. Also, hardcore gamers should stick with Windows.

New also: Mac mini (Intel Core 2 Duo), iWork `08

Beside the all-in-one iMac, Apple also renew its Mac mini to use Intel Core 2 Duo in all line. The cute box is more power now! Mac mini is good if you want to use existing monitor and keyboard & mouse.

Apple updated its office suite software, iWork `08. In the package are Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, which similar to Office’s Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

My two cents

The new iMac has very attractive design and price. I had considering replace my iBook. I will get the 24-inch iMac if I want a Mac desktop, and put it along side with my 24-inch Dell LCD monitor).
