After the introduction, do you really know what fring is? Yes! It’s simply a free mobile VoIP application that enables free mobile internet calls and live chat (IM) to other ‘fringsters’ and PC-based services. These including Skype, Google Talk, ICQ, MSN Messenger and Twitter, using free Wi-Fi or your 3G or GPRS instead of expensive mobile airtime charges.

So, what does it means? It means we could IM (instant message) with friends from Skype, Google Talk, ICQ, MSN, and Twitter even we are on the bus with this single application – Fring !

My two cents

I want to fring up my life with my mobile phone, but it is just a Sony Ericson T290 that only have basic specification. Since my mobile is not in the list of compatible handphone, I can’t do testing on Fring and let you know how well it perform.

If you have a compatible mobile phone, please try it out and share with us here.

  1. I hate the sharp fringtone

I hate it when i click on a name and it calls out for me

I hate it when i’m composing a message and new message comes in and stays on top of the one i’m composing. This results in me writing on the wrong window and sending to the wrong person many times.

I still hate it even though it’s free. I’m sticking with Agile (paid service) unless i desperately need to use Skype, which is like never. I prefer to call the normal way.

Anyway, i’m using Nokia N73ME. Great phone with 3.2mp Carl Zeiss lens for taking pics with superb clarity for blogs, and it’s cheap now. Liew, consider buying this. Then, you can moblog like crazy like me :)

  2. I can’t believe it! Another Symbian/Windows Mobile app. They just cut a huge population of mobile phone users off by not creating a J2ME app. After the success of Gmail, Yahoo Go!, PfingoACTIVE… why make another smart/PDA phone app? Especially when we’re talking about IM here. Reach the masses? no?

  3. Hi, I read this post last night and find the Fring is very useful. So I decided to do a review post on Fring. Have a look when you are free.

  4. @ Paul: fring *is* available for the Nokia E90

@ Samm: Thanks for the feedback.

    1. You can easily change the “sharp ringtone”, just click on ‘Options’ –> ‘fringtone’ and choose another ringtone from your handset.

    2. An option to choose the default ‘joystick in’ action will be added in the near future.

    3. This is a known bug (and yes… it’s annoying) – The chat feature should be improved in the next few weeks.

    Thanks,
    Omri. fring support.
