Review: THL T6C 3G Smartphone with 5-inch Display for RM320

THL T6C rear
THL T6C rear
THL T6C rear

THL T6C is one of the budget smartphones for people who need more than a feature phone without breaking their bank. Read on for my THL T6c smartphone review to learn more about its specs, performance, and price.

Who is THL?

Have not heard about THL? It is okay, neither I know about the brand when I was contacted by DD4.com in the end of 2015.

Apparently, THL (Technology, Happy, Life — technology-based happy life) is an established smartphone brand in China with over 300 brand experience stores in 2012. It is founded by Shenzhen Hongjiayuan Communication Technology Co., Ltd in 2008.

In the white package box, you get a THL T6C smartphone, a quick start guide, microUSB cable, USB power adapter, and a back cover phone case.

THL T6C package
THL T6C package

My review unit is White colour, Black colour is also available. The smartphone has curved edges at the top and bottom. Chrome lines at the left and right sides.

The power button at the right side and volume rocker at the opposite are transparent buttons. Both microUSB port and headphone jack are located at the top. 3 permanent non-back-lit capacitive buttons (options, home, back) at the front bottom.

The protruding rear camera has single LED flash. The rear bottom is a row of speaker grills. The patterned rear cover improves grip, reduce oily finger prints.

Open up the rear cover to reveal the 1900mAh removable lithium-ion battery and dual sim slot with microSD memory card slot.

Overall, THL T6C design is simple and nothing too fancy (chrome line and transparent buttons). The build does not feel cheap or frangible.

THL T6C front

THL T6C has a 5-inch IPS 5-point multi-touch display with FWVGA 854×480 pixels resolution (16:9 aspect ratio). It is bright and vibrant, the viewing angle is good. You seldom get a 5-inch IPS display smartphone at this price range. You seldom get a 5-inch IPS display smartphone at this price range.

You seldom get a 5-inch IPS display smartphone at this price range.

THL T6C stock ROM runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with an active wireless update (latest update version on January 16th, 2016). The skin applies material design and cheerful icons.

THL smartphone interface design
THL smartphone interface design

I am impressed that it does not pre-installed useless 3rd party bloatware. Only total 26 apps in app drawer consist of basic Android apps and Google apps. *thumb up*

Plus, THL smartphone has an “App Permission Manager” allows you to monitor each app’s permission and block as you wish.

THL smartphone app permission manager

THL T6C is powered by a Mediatek MT6580 quad-core 1.3Ghz processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage, supporting microSD memory card up to 32GB. The usable free storage out of the box is 5GB.

THL T6C Antutu benchmark score
THL T6C Antutu benchmark score

In AnTuTu Benchmark v6.0.1 test, the budget smartphone scored 18,688 and failed in 3D test. Yes, it is very far far behind the top smartphones that scored over 70,000 points.

THL T6C ain’t your top performance phone.

In my real-life test, it is okay for most people’s daily phone usage. No problem for web browsing, watching online video and playing a game (Temple Run 2).

The mono speaker has high volume output but lost in details. The WiFi reception is kind of weaker than my other smart devices.

By the way, T6C is a 3G smartphone with Dual SIM Dual Standby mode.

THL T6C has 5MP auto-focus rear camera and 0.3MP front camera. The cameras’ performance is disappointing. Photos are blur and lost of details as if it is over post-processing to reduce noises.

Check out the original photos below: (full-size image available)

THL T6C Specification

  • CPU: Mediatek MTK6580 Quad-core 1.3GHz processor
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Storage: 8GB (support up to 32GB microSD memory card)
  • Display: 5-inch (854×480 pixels), IPS
  • Battery: 1900mAh
  • Camera: 5MP (rear) with LED flash , 0.3MP (front)
  • Standby: 2 SIM 2 Standby
  • Data Transfer: GPRS, EDGE, HSPA, HSPA+
  • Connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, micro USB, audio jack
  • Dimensions: 143.9 x 71.6 x 8.2 mm
  • Weight: 123 g

THL T6C competitions with similar specs and price range are:

  • LEAGOO Alfa 6 — Mediatek MTK6580 Quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, 4.5-inch IPS display, 1600mAh battery, 5MP/2MP cameras
  • ASUS Zenfone C — Intel Z2520 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage (support 64GB microSD card), 4.5-inch TFT display, 5MP/0.3MP cameras

THL T6C is an affordable Android smartphone that works for most people. I like its clean custom ROM and app permission manager. Performance is okay with a quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. The camera quality is disappointed. I do not understand why the rear camera has to be protruding, it is not super-resolution nor optical zoom.

THL T6C is selling on DD4.com for USD$74.99 (~RM320).

Compare ASUS ZenFone Selfie VS ZenFone 2: Which Should You Buy?

ASUS ZenFone Selfie has been launched in Malaysia at the end of August 2015. The new Android smartphone equipped with 13MP front camera with flash. How does it compare with ASUS ZenFone 2? Let’s find out in this article.

ASUS ZenFone Selfie launch in Malaysia
ASUS ZenFone Selfie launch in Malaysia

ASUS ZenFone Selfie design is same as the company’s 2015 flagship smartphone — ZenFone 2, except that you will notice a big front camera on ZenFone Selfie at first glance, and that explain its name.

ASUS ZenFone Selfie launch in Malaysia

ZenFone Selfie’s rear and front cameras are both 13MP resolution. The rear camera has laser focus for fast autofocus. The front camera is 13MP with dual-tone flash — a great upgrade from ZenFone 2’s 5MP front-camera.

Thanks to the laser focus, ZenFone Selfie camera focus is a lot faster than ZenFone 2. Saving camera shoot is also faster, comparing to ZenFone 2 which could take up to 1-2 seconds to save a photo.

ZenFone Selfie display is same 5.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) but uses Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is 2x more drop-damage resistance than Corning Gorilla Glass 3 used on ZenFone 2.

ASUS drops Intel Atom processor and uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor in ZenFone Selfie. It has 3GB RAM, 1GB less than ZenFone 2. Only 32GB storage model is available, supporting microSD memory card up to 128GB.

Both ZenFone Selfie and ZenFone 2 supports Dual SIM cards, but the latter only allows mobile data from 1 SIM slot. ZenFone Selfie is Dual-SIM-Dual-Standby, support 3G/4G networks on both SIM slots (only one SIM card can connect to 3G/4G at a time).

Both ZenFone 2 and ZenFone Selfie are using 3000 mAh Li-Polymer battery, but we expect Qualcomm Snapdragon processor to be more battery efficiency — longer battery life.

Refer the table below for a glance of ZenFone Selfie vs. ZenFone 2:

ZenFone Selfie price in Malaysia is RM 1,049 and available in 3 lovely colours: Pure White, Chic Pink, Aqua Blue.

I recommend ZenFone Selfie over ZenFone 2, the former is a welcome upgrade from the already good ZenFone 2.

ZenFone Selfie has better front & back cameras, tougher glass, and supports Dual 4G SIMs. These features are more important and useful than 4GB RAM in your daily phone usage. Also, I bet you will hardly notice the difference between 3GB and 4GB phone memory.

Plus, ZenFone Selfie is RM150 cheaper than ZenFone 2!

Targus Universal USB 3.0 Dual Video Docking Station with Power Review

Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (Back)

Review of Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (RM919) with two video output, six USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet port and more.

Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (Back)

Laptop input/output ports have been sacrificed for a slimmer and lighter laptop design. Most laptops only have 2 USB ports and supports only one external display. It is okay for on-the-go usage, but you will feel limited when you try to use your slim laptop as a desktop station — your laptop does not have enough ports for computer accessories and cannot have dual-monitor setup.

A docking station will solve the problems by extending single port to many input/output ports via a single cable from your computer. Unplug the cable and you are ready to go with your slim laptop.

In this article, I reviewed the Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (long name, I know) which retail at RM919 (inclusive of GST 6%) in Malaysia. The powered docking station provides two video output, six USB ports (two USB 3.0, four USB 2.0), a Gigabit Ethernet (LAN) port. It is ideal for workstation users, hot-desking, conference rooms, and connect monitors larger than 30-inch.

Sounds cool? Read on to find out more.

Unbox & Design

Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power package includes the docking station with power tips, a DVI-O to VGA converter, a HDMI to DVI-D converter, a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed cable, and two power adapter cable (docking station & laptop).

The package is complete at the first glance before you realize that a power plug cable for the docking station is not included. You will need to use your laptop’s power plug cable for the docking station. You can pre-order the power plug cable at RM25 each.

The docking station is a black colour wedge shape plastic case with blue colour inside. The dimensions are 16.75″ x 6.69″ x 3.15″ and weight 1.36KG. A rubber stripe on the top will hold your device in place and provides a comfortable typing angle.

At the back, you will find ports for power switch, power (in/out), a USB 3.0 uplink, a USB 3.0, three USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, a DVI video out and a HDMI video out. On the left side, you get microphone jack, speaker out jack, and a USB 2.0 port. Another USB 3.0 port and a security lock slot are at the right side.

Open up the cover, you will find 8 power tips for most laptop brands, such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and more. It can charge your laptop while docking.

Setup & Performance

Before you connect Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power to your computer, it is very important that you have visited http://www.targus.com/us/usb3/setup to update drivers for your computer. It supports most laptop brands in the market: ASUS, Dell, HP, Samsung, Toshiba, as well as Apple computers.

Your computer needs to have the latest drivers for USB 3.0 host controller, video card, DisplayLink and Ethernet driver. The docking station installation is easy after updating all the necessary drivers:

  1. Connect power plug cable to docking station’s power adapter.
  2. Connect power cable from the power adapter to the docking station’s power in port.
  3. Connect docking station’s power out to laptop using a compatible power tip.
  4. Connect all peripheral devices (dual monitors, mouse, keyboard, printer, speaker, etc) to the docking station.
  5. Connect your laptop to the docking station with the included USB 3.0 uplink cable.
Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (setup)
Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (setup)

Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power is the first USB 3.0 docking station to deliver laptop power. It provides 8 different power tips, but none is compatible with my laptops — Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro and ASUS Vivobook S400C. Without a compatible power tip, the docking station will still work but cannot charge your laptop.

If your power tip is not included, you can find all available power tips using Targus Tip Configurator. You can pre-order additional power tips from any Targus’ reseller or distributors listed here, each extra tip is RM19.

Windows will automatically install all the necessary drivers when you switch on the docking station for the first time. For an unknown reason, the DisplayLink did not work for my laptop running Windows 10. It only works after I manually download and install the latest DisplayLink driver and restart laptop.

DisplayLink USB graphics technology is designed to connect computers and displays using USB, Ethernet, and WiFi. It also allows multiple displays to be connected to a single computer.

Now, your laptop’s single USB 3.0 port becomes 6 ports USB hub, dual video out and a Gigabit Ethernet port on docking station! The DisplayLink icon in the system tray provides quick display settings, such as screen resolution, screen rotation, mirror and more. For business users, the Wi-Fi AutoSwitch Utility will auto switch computer Wi-Fi connection to wired LAN and reduces redundant network connections.

Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (setup)
Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power (setup)

I connect a 42-inch Full HD TV to the docking station and it works flawlessly. Laptop’s desktop is extending to the TV smoothly and no lag when streaming full-screen video. Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power supports dual video output (DVI-I and HDMI 1.4 with 5.1 audio) with resolution up to 2048 x 1152 pixels each. With the converters, the docking station can output videos to any display that supports DVI-I, HDMI or VGA.

Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power connects to TV

The docking station also supports Windows, Mac OS X and Android operating systems. Targus offers a three-year warranty. For more information, visit www.targus.com

Photo gallery

After setup correctly, Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power instantly turns your laptop into a complete workstation with dual-monitor, 6 ports USB hub and a Gigabit Ethernet port — all using only single USB 3.0 port on your laptop and performance is good. Want to go out? Simply unplug the USB cable and pack your laptop.

The docking station includes many cables but, for its price tag, it should include a power adapter cable, too. It can charge your laptop but make sure you check the power tip compatibility. You may need to pre-order an extra tip or, in my case, no power tip available for your laptop.

I would recommend Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Docking Station with Power if your laptop is your main machine and you want to have a dual-monitor setup and connect to many peripheral devices at office/home.

Hands-on Review: Acer Aspire R11 Convertible with Windows 10

Acer Aspire R11 tend mode
Models pose with Acer Aspire R11
Models pose with Acer Aspire R11

Acer Aspire R 11 is Acer’s smallest convertible which was launched in Malaysia just after the Microsoft Windows 10 global launch.

It is the first Windows 10 pre-installed device in Malaysia. Anyway, every compatible Windows computer gets free Windows 10 upgrade and every new Windows computer will ship with the latest Windows operating system.

So, what’s great about the Acer Aspire R 11? Read on to find out.

360-degree hinge

Acer Aspire R11 tend mode
Acer Aspire R11 tend mode

Generally, small factor notebooks do not have a flexible hinge, but Acer Aspire R11 is an 11.6-inch convertible laptop with a 360-degree hinge. You can use it in 4 different modes: notebook, pad, display, and tent.

The dual torque hinge design allows you to open the lid with one finger till 110 degrees for notebook mode. Then, with another hand pressing R 11’s base, you can further press the lit forward until it lay flat. You can lift it up and flip the lid to the back, too. The hinge is stable and provides wobble-free touch experience.

The audio channel output will automatically reverse based on the screen orientation. Desktop wallpaper will change as you switch R11 to a different mode, too — so that you can quickly identify the current mode.

Acer Aspire R11 fabric-textured cover
Acer Aspire R11 fabric-textured cover

Acer Aspire R 11’s fabric-textured cover offers better grip and is scratch resistant. The laptop chassis feels a bit bulky but tough. The keyboard is almost full-size and comfortable to type on.

The display glass is Corning Gorilla Glass for anti-scatches and smoother touch experience. It also comes with anti-fingerprint coating to keep the screen clean and clear.

Complete ports

Despite the small size of the convertible laptop, R11 includes complete range of input/output ports at the left side: 1x USB3.0 port, 1x USB2.0 port, HDMI port, headphone/speaker jack, and an Ethernet (LAN) port.

Acer Aspire R11 ports
Acer Aspire R11 ports

I am surprised that an LAN port is included, because it is rare, even on a larger laptops. An LAN port is handy when your hotel only provides wired Internet.

Turn to the back, you will find the SD memory card reader at the center of the back. It is not a convenient position but better than none. R11 also supports fast WiFi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/AC).

Pentium Performance

Acer Aspire R 11 is powered by Intel Pentium Quad-core processor (N3700) with 4GB (max. 8GB) and 500GB hard disk drive.

“Pentium” processor may be a deal breaker in the year 2015 but, during my hands-on period, R11 runs Windows 10 smoothly with no lag, mode switching is fast too. Daily office works won’t be a problem, but not recommended for gaming.

The 11.6-inch HD (1366×768 pixel) display is LED-backlit TFT LCD with multi-touch. The resolution is fine on a small display, but the viewing angle is bad that wash out when you view it from a side.

The 48 Wh 3220 mAh 4-cell Li-ion battery pack provides up to 8 hours battery life, according to Acer. The convertible laptop weight 1.5KG with the battery pack.

Acer Aspire R 11 comes with several software features:

  • Acer TrueHarmoney to deliver better audio.
  • Acer BluelightShield protects your eyes by reducing screen’s blue light.
  • Skype Certified laptop to ensure high-quality audio and video for Skype calls.
  • Acer Touch Tools allows you to capture, collect, write and share screen data with a touch of a finger.
  • Precision TouchPad (PTP) enhance the accuracy and performance of the touchpad navigation, as well as palm rejection technology to distinguish between finger gestures or accidental contact with palm or hand.

You also get 1-year free Microsoft Office 365 subscription with every purchase of R11.

Price in Malaysia

Acer Aspire R 11 priced at RM1,499 and available at all major Authorized Acer Resellers.

Photo Gallery

Acer Aspire R11 is not slim nor lightweight, but 360-degree hinge provides usability anywhere, such as in a tight space like airline seat or classroom. The small size and complete ports make it an ideal on-the-go laptop, as well as a primary computer for students.

What do you think about Acer Aspire R11 and its price?
