The Crowd at the Maxis iPhone 5 Launch Day

Maxis iPhone 5 launch event was held at CapSquare Mall, Kuala Lumpur in the 13rd December night. LiewCF was one of the invited media to witness the Maxis iPhone 5 launch in the midnight (14th December).

This year venue is smaller than last year’s KLCC (iPhone 4S launch). Rooms and halls are temporarily made for the event. Anyhow, Maxis still received mass response from the media and customers.

Do you know that, Maxis offered all attended media members a special Media Price Offer, which was a huge discount on iPhone 5 unit price. No doubt media were excited too.

During the Media Q&A, I asked if iPhone 5 supports Maxis LTE network or not. Received a long answer, but it simply means “No or Not Yet”. Anyway, rumor has it that Malaysia might have LTE 1800MHz soon which is supported by iPhone 5. We’ll see.

Maxis has prepared a simple Media Center with 2 tables and some chairs for us to do some work or live updates.

The iPhone 5 queue was already very long when we went down from the Media Center. Maxis was serving free refreshments to the people.

The first in the queue are a couple: Mr. Wong Tee Wee and his wife, Chin Yen Yee. They were there since 10am morning! iPhone 5 is the 3rd Apple phone Wong owns. Previously, he owned iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 (skipped iPhone 4S).

Wong and Chin subscribeb to Maxis iValue 1 plan (RM100/month) and were not aware that Maxis has a cheaper plan — iValue Simple — at only RM50/month until I told them. (Maxis revealed iValue Simple plan 1 day before iPhone 5 launch)

There’s a Corporate Hall prepared for Maxis VIPs. Food and beverage were served, as well as stage performances. The Consumer Hall, on the other hand, was located underground floor and doesn’t have the luxury services.

Maxis has prepared 65 payment counters, 9 collection counters and 30 activation counters. The first 45 customers in the queue received a free limited edition “First to own iPhone 5” t-shirt.

We waited in front a big screen and count down to 12:00am 14th December 2012 then “BOM!”

All first 45 customers rushed down to Consumer Hall to collect their iPhone 5. Photographers went crazy chasing the No.1 customer, Mr. Wong and his wife. Camera flash fired non-stop, everyone wanted to capture the best shot.

I was glad to see Red Crescent was there just in case anyone got too excited to own an iPhone 5. ;)

When I left at 1:30am, the queue was even longer. I shot a video to show you the craziness of the Maxis iPhone 5 queue.

On the next day, I read news that many Maxis customers in the queue previous night could not get the iPhone 5 models (32GB, 64GB) they pre-booked because it was out of stock. That’s weird. Since they have pre-booked, Maxis should have prepared enough stock.

I heard that Maxis accepted customers who had not pre-register to buy iPhone 5 at the launch too. Anyway, as my friend told, Maxis contacted the disappointed customers 1-by–1 to resolve the matter.
