My Shopping List for PIKOM PC Fair 2008 (II)

So, it’s PIKOM PC Fair 2008 (II) today! Have you been there? I am going to Kuala Lumpur today to join the crowd. I plan to do some shopping at PC Fair such as Apple iMac, external hard drive, MSN Wind, WebCam, and Camcorder.

Table of Contents

Apple iMac 24-inch 2.8GHz

It’s time to upgrade my Mac experience. My 3-year-old Apple 12-inch iBook G4 is working fine but I think it’s time to upgrade for a better Mac experience. I plan to get the Apple iMac 24″ 2.8GHz model (RM6,399/~USD 1965). I will have another 24″ monitor then!

Hopefully, I can get a good deal at PC Fair. Normally, there is no discount but you might get some freebies, perhaps an iPod? :)

External hard disk

If I buy an Apple iMac, then I should get an external hard disk too. The external hard disk is needed to activate Mac OS X Leopard’s Time Machine realtime backup feature. I would buy Western Digital’s My Book Studio Edition, which is a Mac-ready external hard disk. The price is around RM500 for a 500GB model. 1TB model is available.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

There are several computers at my home but none has proper backup. In order to keep our data safe, I think NAS would be the ideal backup solution because ALL computers can backup to 1 NAS over the Local Area Network (LAN), consider the NAS has enough storage space.

To be specific, I need a NAS that support both Mac & Windows. RAID 1 (mirroring) support is better. Hot-swap is good to have. My budget for NAS is around RM1,500.

I did over 10 hours of online research…and found a few that look good: Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, LaCie 2big Network, and Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo.

As well as network storage enclosure (does not come with hard disk): Synology Disk Station DS207+, Thecus N2100, and QNAP TS-209.

Generally, network storage enclosure has more and better features but they are also more expensive, considering that they come without hard disk. You have to buy the hard disks.

Do you have other NAS recommendations?

Netbook (MSI Wind)

<a href=”http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Laptop-Intel-Processor-Battery/dp/B001AS1VOA%3FSubscriptionId%3D0PZ7TM66EXQCXFVTMTR2%26tag%3Dliewccomtechg-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB001AS1VOA” title=””MSI Wind 10″ Mini Laptop (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) White””>If I buy the iMac, I will own a Mac laptop, a Mac desktop, and a Vista desktop. That is 3 computers for 1 person! But, I still wish to get a netbook! :P

I have less interest on the ASUS Eee PC but am eyeing the MSI Wind 10-inch mini laptop. The price should be less than RM2,000. It is still a new product, not sure if I can get it at the PC Fair 2008(II) yet.

As far as I noticed, Intel will promote various netbooks at their booth. Of course, the ASUS booth for Eee PC, too. Test drive netbook if you spot one. :)

Camcorder

<a href=”http://www.amazon.com/DCR-SR65E-Handycam-Camcorder-Vario-Tessar-SwivelScreen/dp/B001977R72%3FSubscriptionId%3D0PZ7TM66EXQCXFVTMTR2%26tag%3Dliewccomtechg-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB001977R72″ title=””Sony DCR-SR65E “Pal” 40GB HDD Handycam Camcorder, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens, 25x Optical/2000x Digital Zoom Lens, 2.7″ Touch Panel SwivelScreen LCD””>My elder brother asks me to buy a camcorder for him. The model he wants is Sony DCR-SR65E, a 40GB HDD handycam camcorder. The price is around RM2,500 with value kit (extra battery + bag).

Webcam

I need a webcam that works on both my Vista box and Apple iBook. I don’t need a fancy webcam, the price should be around RM100+. I might get a Logitech webcam.

My two cents

It could be a MEGA hardware shopping… All of them will cost me over RM10,000! Impossible for me to bring all the cash, and it is the time where credit cards come in handy.

By the way, my younger brother will go with me. Without his help, I am not able to bring back all the stuff back to Johor. For your information, the Apple iMac 24-inch alone weights 11.5KG!

How about you? What will you buy at PC Fair?
