Windows Vista Build 5308 Review and Screenshots

Microsoft released the Windows Vista February CTP (Community Technology Preview). This Windows Vista version is completed with features you will get in the final release. PC Magazine ran Windows Vista build 5308 and took a lot of screenshots.

We found this build of Vista is responsive and highly usable, though still far from bullet-proof (as is to be expected for beta software). Aside from some of the predictable problems with hardware-device support and still-buggy features, one particular problem was that Windows Explorer crashes frequently. To Microsoft’s credit, these crashes were hardly dramatic, since Explorer managed to restart itself and resume each time.

My two cents

Have you noticed the computer specs used in the test? It was Pentium 4 2.80 GHz with 2GB memory! If your computer is more than two years old, it probably can’t performs some cool Windows Vista features. Microsoft knows it, that’s why Vista can tell you which programs drag down system startup time.

No doubt, Windows Vista is a great Windows release since Windows 95 (11 years ago!). It has a glassy and transparency look everywhere, and many new features remind me of Mac OS X… Anyway, I think it’s about time for me to get a new PC, which will replace my good o’l Pentium III 450Mhz. :)

  1. Ah, well..The Windows Vista. Indeed, it’s so heavy that you will be surprised how slow the system runs even with a 3.0GHz CPU! Believe me or not? Vista will no longer support 800px x 600px resolution! The minimum requirement is 1024px x 768px..I tried it on my lappy which supports minimum 800 x 600 and everything was soooo large that I couldnt even see the Start menu! I couldnt switch to 1024 x 768 as it doesnt have my graphics drivers in the list and XP version drivers cannot be installed in Vista! Good thing is that most drivers come together with the Windows Vista itself. You wont have to install the wireless 8200b/g driver, and some of those which you still need to install on XP! I believe there will be new machines produced upon the launching of Vista since specs for the BEST in XP seems AVERAGE in Vista.
One more good thing Ilike about Vista is the self-installation procedure. You just have to select what you want in the beginning, partition level, your details , and everything, and then you can leave your PC running while it installs itself. Unlike XP which you have to enter data etc in the middle of the installation. My advice is, DONT buy Vista till at least the first service pack (SP1) will be released. By then, appropriate machines will be released and most of the bugs will be fixed. Eh, who’s bloggin? Me or LiewCF? LOL!

  2. I think shahz raises a good point. WHo can remember the horror of XP when it first came out? I can’t I’ve had hypnotherapy :p !

It’ll be 2008 before SP 1 comes out for vista. Can you wait that long?

Also, any word of 64bit chip support? Appologies if its been a given but I’m no fan of ambiguity. :)
