Google China New Home in HongKong, No Censorship
Google finally decided to redirect Google China’s traffic to Google Hong Kong. All traffic to Google.CN will be redirect to Google.com.HK, a new home of Google China.
Google Hong Kong homepage has been updated to welcome visitors redirected from Google.CN with the sentence “Welcome you to the new home of Google Search in China” (欢迎您来到谷歌搜索在中国的新家).
In the blog post, “A new approach to China: an update“, David Drummond, SVP, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer wrote that:
So earlier today (3/22/2010) we stopped censoring our search services—Google Search, Google News, and Google Images—on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong. Users in Hong Kong will continue to receive their existing uncensored, traditional Chinese service, also from Google.com.hk.
Also, Google created a new page “Mainland China service availability” to display the status of Google services within China: Blocked, Partially Blocked or No issue. Based on the page, Youtube, Google Sites, and Blogger are fully blocked in China. (yes, we knew it!)
According to Alexa top sites, Google.cn is the 3rd top site in China. The 1st is Baidu.com and 2nd is QQ.com.
