Build Spyware Free Computer for Office
After removing thousands of spywares from my offce PCs (I should make a “spyware removed counter”), I come out an idea to build spyware free computer that can restore. It is not that complicated actually…
What we need?
- A new or spyware free PC with required softwares installed
- A partition backup tool
- A USB flash memory disk
How?
Create a backup of the PC using partition backup tool. Every staff get a USB disk to save their own stuff in it. They can even run their own email client and web browser on USB disk.
Once the PC is infected by spywares, we can easily restore it to the spyware free status in few minutes using the partition backup tool. Staff’s files are stored in USB disk, no worry about losting their hardwork files.
Thought:
I really want to apply this to my office, since most of them using computer for checking emails and typing documents only. It will make my life easier and more time to shake my legs.
Of course, we can use Linux Live CD for this purpose and it is easier, because the Live CD comes with all required softwares! However, over 99% users are more comfortable with Microsoft Windows.
Hi.. there’s software out there designed to do exactly this. Take a look at Rapid Restore at http://www.xpoint.com.
I can get you evaluation copies of the software if you are keen. ;)
i think u should replace the partition backup tool with some kind of ghosting tool(e.g. Norton Ghost). i think there’re plenty of opensource ghosting tool out there. nice idea. maybe u should patent it….
check out a software named Deep Freeze by Faronics. Its a system restore utility, u restart the pc, everything normal. Use this and i can assure you shake legs ;)
@H4RRY: I did search for free partition backup tool while I was writting it, but no luck. Personally, I recommend Ghost 8.0 for that purpose.
@rush: Thanks. I remember there was some kind of PCI card do the same thing. Anyway, I must keep something to do to keep my job. ;)
If you were looking to do something like this, couldnt you simply create a user on the computer that does not have write access to the windows\ and windows\system32 directories? I remember doing this on a windows2000 machine, with a decent firewall this can prove to be relatively stable, I also know there is a way to run windows entirely off of cd, I have done this with 98 , Here is the link to a page about this http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ I believe that page is about doing this with win2k or xp. I am not sure, however I do believe making a stable copy of xp with a ghosting program would be the easiest, or simply a good firewall and quit using ie, try opera or firefox or something..
