Maxis has announced that it is all set to launch Maxis 4G LTE service in Malaysia following the allocation of the 2600 MHz spectrum band for 4G LTE by MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission).

Please note that 2600 MHz spectrum band is not supported by Apple iPhone 5, which will be launched in Malaysia on Dec 14, 2012.

There are so many different LTE bands used in different countries by different telcos. iPhone 5 has 3 variants models to support many LTE bands: 1(2100 MHz) , 3(1800 MHz), 4(AWS), 5(850 MHz), 13(700c MHz), 17(700b MHz), 25(1900 MHz), but Band 7(2600 MHz) is not in the list.

Apple made an iPhone supported LTE networks page to help you to see if iPhone 5 works with LTE networks in your country. Malaysia is not in the list, yet.

Your new Maxis iPhone 5 cannot use Maxis 4G LTE network. It’s ironic. To be fair, none of the Malaysian telcos’ LTE network supported by iPhone 5. They are all using 2600 MHz. Blame MCMC?

We were hoping that MCMC, like what Singapore did, release license for LTE Band 3(1800 MHz) in addition to Band 7(2600 MHz). We are still waiting…

Currently, only Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 in Malaysia supports LTE frequency 2600 MHz.
