P1 Updated WiMAX Wireless Broadband Plans. What Have Changed?

Packet One Networks (P1) updated their WiMAX wireless broadband plans in June 2013. There are some changes in terms of pricing and allowed data quota. I checked with its previous plans and here’s my finding.

Compare P1 OnePlan

P1 OnePlan is the plan with both P1 home router modem and P1 on-the-go modem (MiFi). Here are the updated OnePlan packages:

New P1 OnePlan
New P1 OnePlan

Here are the previous OnePlan packages:

Old P1 OnePlan
Old P1 OnePlan

When you compare with previous OnePlan, you will notice that the new OnePlan 109 is more expensive but same data quota with previous OnePlan 99. However OnePlan 129 receives 5GB more data quota per month. OnePlan 169, despite higher monthly price, has lower price per GB.

Previously, you receive free MF230 MiFi modem with OnePlan 99 and add RM100 for MX230 MiFi modem; Both OnePlan 129 and OnePlan 149 receives free MF230 or MX230.

Now, P1 no longer offer free MiFi modem to low OnePlan. OnePlan 109 customer needs to pay RM100 for MF230 or RM150 for MX230. OnePlan 129 get MF230 for free but need to pay RM150 for MX230. High plan, OnePlan 169, still receives free MF230 or MX230.

Compare P1 ForHome Plans

P1 ForHome is the wireless broadband plans with home router modem only (no MiFi modem). Here are the updated ForHome plans:

New P1 ForHome plans

Here are the previous ForHome plans:

Previous ForHome Plan
Previous ForHome Plan

The low ForHome 79 plan is more expensive than previous ForHome 69 but share the same 8GB data quota per month. ForHome 99 and ForHome 139 are cheaper for previous mid and high plans, in terms of price per GB.

Compare P1 ToGo Plans

P1 ToGo is designed for mobile users, 4 types of P1 modem available: UT235 USB dongle, UH 235 USB modem, MF230 and MX230 MiFi modem. Here are the updated ToGo plans:

New P1 ToGo plans

Here are the previous ToGo plans:

Previous P1 ToGo plans
Previous P1 ToGo plans

The monthly prices and data quotas stay the same. New ToGo 39 plan receives free UT 235 dongle with 6-months contract or free UH 235 USB modem with 12-month contract. But, ToGo 39 24-month contract now need to pay RM100 for MF230 MiFi or RM150 for MX230 MiFi – pay RM50 more each.

ToGo 69 and ToGo 99 now get free MF230 MiFi for 12-month contract or add RM150 for MX230 MiFi.

The low plan for each category (OnePlan, ForHome, ToGo) is more expensive after update. Mid and High plans now get more data quota but also increase in monthly fees, though the “price per GB quota” is cheaper. Make sure you use as much allowed data quota as possible, so that you are not wasting money (higher monthly fee) paying what you are not using (more data quota).

What do you think about the new P1 wireless broadband plans?

P1 MiFi Modem (MF230) Review: Performance (Part 2 of 2)

P1 4G MiFi modem (MF230)

P1 4G MiFi modem (MF230)

As a member of P1 MiFi Seeding Program, I received a P1 MiFi modem (MF230) loan unit with unlimited usage quota for review. This is part 2 of 2. Read Part 1 here.

Network coverage

P1 MiFi modem (MF230) is designed for outdoor usage where less objects blocking the P1 wireless network signal. However, no harm to use it indoor, as long as the modem catches the P1 network signal.

Unlike telco networks which you expected they have coverage anywhere you are, P1 network coverage is smaller. You might get excellent reception here, but poor reception just a few steps away.

It is a bit frustrating that you need to find a sweet spot (good network coverage) to place the P1 MiFi modem, instead of moving around freely with the MiFi modem in your pocket.

MiFi download speed

MF230 can support download speed up to 10Mbps. The download speed is greatly depends on the P1 network signal quality of a location.

I was able to get up to 6Mbps download speed. But the download speed could potentially slow down to only few hundred Kbps with poor P1 network signal. It’s a mixed experience.

Quote from P1 website:

“Speed depends on factors such as modem capability, location, distance from communication towers and number of simultaneous users.”

Battery life

I was told that MF230 battery life is only 4 hours. But in my testing, MF230 battery life last longer than 6 hours. Nice!

P1 4G MiFi Plans

MF230 MiFi modem is available ToGo PostPaid plans, starting from RM39/month. The MF230 modem is free if you sign up 24 months contract.

MF230 MiFi modem also available for P1 OnePlan subscribers with RM100 upfront.

P1 MiFi Modem (MF230)

P1 4G MiFi modem (MF230)

The P1 MiFi modem model I received for review is MF230. In the package, you get the MF230 MiFi modem, a micro USB cable, and a simple user guide.

MF230 design is minimal. It looks like a small black plastic box with glossy surface, where scratches easily noticeable. It only has a micro-USB port for charging, and a power button to switch on/off device or switch to sleep mode. 3 LED lights indicating WiMax, WiFi, and Power.

WiMax LED is the one you want to check to ensure you are in P1 network coverage. When the Power LED is blinking in blue, you know the battery capacity is less than 25%. If Power LED is blinking in red, it is time to charge your MiFi modem.

P1 MF230 MiFi modem supports up to 5 devices at the same time.

No SIM card needed

Don’t confuse P1 MiFi modem with the other telco’s MiFi modem such as Huawei E5832. P1 MiFi modem does not need a SIM card. It is turn-on-and-play.

Setup P1 MiFi Modem

Did I just say “setup”? P1 MiFi modem doesn’t need any setup!

Once your P1 account has been activated, simply switch on the MiFi modem, then connect to its WiFi hotspot from your other devices using the SSID and WEP information found at the back.

Advance users can login the modem setup panel via (username: admin, password: admin123) to customize the default settings.
