TMnet Blame Streamyx Broadband Users on P2P Usage

TM Net is unhappy with P2P users who utilize most of their bandwidth.

CYBERJAYA: Peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic is choking up local broadband lines with 20% of users utilising 80% of the total bandwidth, according to Internet service provider (ISP) TM Net Sdn Bhd.

Dr Fadhullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek, general manager of TM Net’s corporate and strategy services, said that as the number of local broadband subscribers increases, more users are expected to use P2P applications such as Kazaa and BitTorrent to transfer files online.

“We are not against our customers using P2P. However, it is an unfair situation which needs to be addressed, as we cannot upgrade our infrastructure (merely) for the benefit of the minority,” he said.

To counter this problem, TM Net will introduce a number of time-based packages to cater for low-bandwidth users by the third quarter, said Mohd Nazeem Mohd Nasir, assistant manager of TM Net’s technology planning and development department.

My two cents

I feel that TM Net regrets in its decision to offer unlimited broadband packages. I’m afraid TM Net will stop offering unlimited packages soon, and force all users to switch to time-based broadband packages.

A rumor says that TM Net is capping Bittorrent download speed. BT client download speed has been heavily cut down.

One solution is to use BT clients that support “Protocol Encryption” such as UTorrent, Azureus, and BitComet. Configuration steps are shown in a thread in LowYat.net. Good luck!

  1. Great!! Cut those pirate bit torrent people out!!

But come to think of it not all are pirates. I for one use Bit Torrent legitimately to get Twit video podcast.

I think TM Net is just looking for some blame in areas where their services have been criticized. I think it’s just an excuse.

  2. Sigh…if I recalled correctly, total users of streamyx is around 500000+. 20% of it use their full ‘purchased’ bandwidth and tmnet cannot handle it already. How about if all the users utilize their full available bandwidth also? Tmnet already throttling port 6881-6999. They always advertised unlimited data transfer and usage time for RM XX. When they cannot handle it, they always find excuse such as piracy and blah blah blah… .They maybe imposed invisible bandwidth limit like what Comcast did. IF they cannot handle the traffic, don’t go out and advertise unlimited something. Most of their customers subscribe for streamyx because of the unlimited bandwidth transfer and usage time. If they really force all user to switch to time-based package, they can because they have the right(according to the agreement when we subscribe). Well, for those who subscribe not long than 1 years, they “can’t” cancel it(read the agreement again and u will know..). I hope they won’t do something that “annoying”.

WE SUBSCRIBE TO STREAMYX BECAUSE OF THE UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH OFFER AND USAGE TIME! don’t we?=_=

  3. Yea, all this when they have been encouraging people to download MP3s as shown on their site. We know where some of those MP3s comes from and one thing leads to another…

  4. I think you people are bitchin over nothing. ISPs just can’t carry on with leechers who leave their bit torrent client sucking movie files into their PCs. Shut those people down and there will be a big difference in speed.

  5. don’t quite agree with Sarah.. this is a discussion place.

Of course streamyx expects everybody to pay monthly fixed rate and only use it for 5 minutes…Ideally, some people are like that.. so streamyx goes on to celebrate their bonuses.

However, in the real world there are also people who want to pay for RM 10 and hope for RM 20. So we kindly ask them to be civilized.

In this situation, we are paying for RM 10 and why can’t we deserve RM 10 ? Get real please.

what is minority ? where at the statistic ?

Whey are they unhappy that people are using their service ? Grow up please.

  6. Come on, they gave us an $88 package for unlimited usage.

How or what we use it for varies from one person to another. The big word he used was “abusing” which I cannot disagree more. We are using the bandwidth, the supposedly 1MB DL/ 512K UL, 24/7.

Are we abusing the bandwidth? Its ours to use.

  7. Someone may follow with a statement that says we road users abuse the use of roads while they fail to improve the facilities. We should stay at home and don’t drive often right?

  8. As a service provider, a company,… you don’t go blaming your customers! If your customers want to use BitTorrent you should support them. Give me an affortable altanative to streamyx, and I will gladly switch.

  9. yup agreed.

this is the problem with monopoly of industries in Malaysia.

I want to live for the day when Malaysia deregulate the few main industries – Telecom, Energy, Transportation and Petroluem.

But with population of just 25 millions, maybe there is no need for deregulation lar :O

  10. Our government are encouraging us to use broadband and the service provider said they can’t handle it.. sounds interesting.

  11. 1st of all our government allowed monopoly. then the company that the government allowed monopoly cannot supply the consumer demand. then the company look for excuse to cut down the supply or cut our money some more. then we end up with less or paying more.

  12. I took over 50 years for US to build their telecommunications system up, and only recently, like 4 years ago, they started complaining about their users bandwidth. Streamyx has been here for like what, 5? Its a mistake having everything be handled by 1 company, maybe its unfair to compare with such a developed country, but then we started off with current tech, while US had to develop their own from scratch.

And not only that, in that 5 years, never have i had a smooth connection for more than 2 days. For the amount i used to pay, and the amount im currently paying, its seriously not worth it. The next thing you know, their gonna blame it on the petrol prices.

Well, once they start bandwidth control, it will probably hurt cybercafe’s the most, having cater to so many users and online games… shiesh…

  13. Just another TMnet (and TM’s) lame excuse for not being able to keep up with customers demand.

If you sell a RM88/= package for 1mbps, why do you care how I use it? I have a right to use up to 1mbps, that is, if the line is OK. Who in Malaysia get 1mbps anyway? We should be getting a discount instead.

We bought your broadband because we can do all these stuff. If you dont allow us to do it, why bother market broadband anyway? We’d be better of on dialup.

Are you (TMnet) denying us our rights? Dont blame us (those that are using P2P), for your cockup in not being able to give up-to-mark service your other customers. Dont blame us.

Does PLUS blame the motorists for making full use of their highway? Does TNB blame the consumers for putting in more a/cons?

  14. I just have to say that it is always easier to blame than to solve. Maybe its the inability to understand the english meaning for the word ‘unlimited’. Maybe if they allowed faster downloads then everyone would finnish their downloads faster and not hog the network! Really. In other countries service providers proves their services then sets the prices so as everyone knows what they are paying for, here its the exact opposite ya:p

  15. For $%&# sake. Limit 2Gbps. Bit – torrent problems. Geeesh. What about watching trailers, watching news, watching gossip tv, listening to streaming music. 1 trailer watching in high quality mode is about 30 MB and they want to limit us to 2Gbps. I can’t even download a Linux ISO file. WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING.

We need more players, not a company demanding to make more money and not laying out more cables. I;m so sick of TMNET, what can we do. they are the only one. JARING, please!!!!!! They are also getting the bandwidth from TMNET, no diff. There goes our revival on MSC projects. SUCKS!!!!

  16. Finally having some spare time to visit my usual forum and also saw the link to this forum and after reading most of the response in this thread, i am inclined to share my 2 cents…(please bear with me as I am releasing tonnes of anguish and despair in my comments below)

First and foremost at 500K users..oops latest figures at 600K plus users or is it ports, it is still a small number as compared to other countries….capping or limiting P2P which they are doing at BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Servers) is one hell of an EXCUSE. Wat they should do is increase more Backbone pipes and not waiting for it to be clogged, and then increase the infra. In the mean time before that we are already held at ransom and as always it is the USERS it is the CUSTOMERS to be blame, for their lack of hindsight and forecast…..

BTW i believe the govt under our YBG Lim Keng Yaik, is driving and pushing these ISPs to get the 1 mill mark by end of 2006. I doubt that we can even hit that mark, by the way the term broadband users and port utilisation is two different thing. Broadband users in Malaysia today is either 40% to 50% less than the number reported for the following reasons,
1 imagine 7,000 ports used in schools, maybank using 150 ports for all their branches, x how many banks, how many companies with branches, government department etc…..we actually end up with about 300K to 400K household broadband users….

Wat a sad number, and blame who of course lar we the customers wor not wanting to adapt to broadband. Before that remember when fastest speed was at 512K and later it was upgraded to 1Mb, how happy was I to hear only to find out later they have yet to upgrade the necessary backbone to cater for the new speed and for the new customers yet to subscribe to their speed.

So i guess if you want to cap the speed at BRAS, DSLAM or PBOX, then by all mean is your prerogative but as a provider TMNET sucks….P2P is one of the best reason to promote broadband, and not the other way round…..like another forumer who mentioned the situation in US, how come other place like US, UK is not facing the similar problems…..how come only in our beloved Bolehland we are facing this problem…..

I believe the new Boss at TMNET has been preaching all over the country about the 3C Communication, Content and another C can’t remember it…….so if you are pushing for content you have to expect that people will want to use any means to get content be it local or oversea and as an ISP you have to find SOLUTION and not go behind our back and capping or blocking the P2P.

Today its announced TM announced 38.6% increase in Net Profit, RM518 million Net profit for 1 Quarter. Why cant the profit be used to upgrade your back bone, your CRM (1300889515) currently with VADS (Another subsidiary of Terrokom) whom CSR only knows to say yup “its definitely your modem problem, its never been TM or TMNET problem…..or you just have to have the patience to wait for 20 minutes to get a response..

As for our Minister why can’t you look at how Korea deploy their broadband, why can’t you find more incentives i.e. tax rebate to broadband users for 5 years for example…..to drive broadband…..
Why I only see the Ministry of Sports and Ministry of Transport advert on TV, why don’t KTAK come up with their drive for broadband…..

    Why and so many whys…….

As for Jaring stop bullshitting people and says that you have wired coverage nationwide, when you are to scare to purchase the ports from TM wholesale…..have the balls to go head on with TMNUT and if ever need help to identify the demand, maybe you can head hunt TMNET’s towkay port…..

well i guess enough babbling ere and there, and sorry for taking up too much space, I believe we are still far behind in broadband, and for local ISPS delivering broken promises….well hope my beloved Minister in KTAK can start whipping these ISPsssssssss…

    regards

    ACCESS UNLIMITED FOR ALL…….

  17. hmm… yeah. Agreed.

    I blame it on politics.

Politics in this country is not strong enough to push for reform, merely to protect individual interest of the elites.

Perhaps is about time someone with ICT background step up to the parliment to push for more technological reform.

Can Cyberjaya succeed Silicon Valley’s vision of nurturing world-class ICT startup ?

  18. TMnet Blame Users on P2P Usage???????????????
What the fuck !…is this that way malaysia dealing business?IF u cant provide better service that U still want to blame customers then U SHUT DOWN the *** TELEKOM BERHAD…when foreign countries are improving thier internet service n u r there blaming customers on causing problem to internet …then how can malaysia compete with them …streamyx really make malaysian a SHAME…***
ADVISE for those who want to subscribe streamyx:NEVER SUBSCRIBE streamyx…they r crab ,shit .their service never improve.

  19. Interesting debate here – here I thought (as TMNET tells me) that I was the only one with what seems to be a dial up connection.

I also have been given the P2P story for 4 months now. I test DAILY my connection speed on various online test sites, and I have been down to 5kb/s. Now its between 25 and 85. Once in a blue moon, I get 900k (actually download, not the TMNET Speedometer which does not test actual internet download speed, as the application connects directly through their network and servers – another ploy to lure us into believing that the speed is fine, or at least having an excuses ready, telling us everything is fine.

So I finally got their Tip Top High Level, VIP, Crisis Emergency Team leader on the phone, who asked me to do do some tracerts and send to him. Which I did. On ALL international sites, there was a over 500ms between hops – so conveniently the guy says “the problem is outside malaysia, and so we can’t do anything.” But in malaysia it is fine! As I told him its called surfing the internet, not the malaynet.

Right now, on this November 5th, it seems he has given up. I was given a proxy that I might try, which actually made it worse. He did reassure me that within 2 months, they would have a major upgrade that would sort out the problems. In the meantime – wait.

It seems something is horribly wrong with the architecture that TMNET has put in place. I know from Europe, that broadband comes from a separate line, with nice junky kables – with fiberoptics connecting these at street level. When I got my “broadband” installed here, I was quite surprised that the technician pulled out these small wires, split them so that I could also have a telephone (thanks!) as well as broadband!!! This just proves that Malaysia is REALLY behind on the infrastructure level and that broadband is really not broadband.

It looks like we are far far away from having proper broadband here. In Europe they are rolling out 4,6 and 8 Mbit lines, which actually DO provide you with these speeds. Here, TMNET is PROUD to now being able to offer 2 mbit! Politicians needs to wake up, but WE as consumers should also speak up. Unfortunately we cannot give up internet (just like we need food and water) but perhaps it is time to properly unite, and create a front agains this. I am thinking of a dedicated website, going to newspapers, writing letters to politicians.

If we don’t do – no one will!

    -Tim

P.S. I come from a european country with 6 million people. If this country can upgrade its infrastructure to provide 8 mbit lines, the least TMNET can do is make their 1mbit lines work in a country with 4 times as many inhabitants.

  20. I’m an American citizen working in Malaysia for the past 3 years. All of this is really sad, the way TmNet manage this situation. I sincerely think Tmnet have a bad ethic of doing business. They should stop pointing finger at customer for their own problem and start improving and upgrade their system or maybe just replace those management people such as that so call Dr Fadhullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek with someone who really can perform their duty and solve problem rather trying to find excuses. Enough said.

  21. Sure, blame it on the customers for their blatant incompetence at solving their own problems! Everyone should just boycott paying their monthly bills. Why should you, if TM isn’t giving you the services that you paid for!
They are penalising customers just so they can cover up their incompetence. TM is one of the worst ISP in the ASEAN region!

  22. Well, i pay rm90 for 1mb. So give me 1mb!!! is that too much to ask? All i’ll use is 1mb.

If they can’t come up with the infra then let someone else do it. What i do with my broadband is my business and mine alone. No one has say over it and i’m responsible for what i do…

  23. today (24 nov) streamyx is not streaming in Sabah Sarawak n Kelantan. Not even a notice of the location of interuption. at least they can notify us by email a day or two. I’m really piss off now. business not running.

  24. Enough talk already. 600k(Subscriber) x 20% = 120,000. Each package average is RM77. That mean is RM9,240,000 per month and RM110,880,000 per year. So, if we all face the same problem. Then we should all cancel the package at once. Then TMNet will listen to us. Because if the 20% of user cancel package, they will be losing RM 9,240,000 per month and RM 110,880,000 per year. Teach them a lesson not to point finger!

  25. Haha blaming us? that’s lame, don’t talk the talk and not do the walk, TMNET in business speaking should be prepared for this, they should assume this and stop blaming, maybe your contract should state how we use Streamyx? where’s the fun in that? Maybe there should be a “Knowing how to use your Streamyx” in schools, “Don’t download this and that, just use it to surf, yea yea we pay RM88 and we got restricted on P2P and such, maybe you should rethink your package, RM44 for 1Mb for those who don’t use P2P haha, why pay more when we can’t fully use it. Lame lame lame

Anyway I heard about this new service in Penang, also found out there’s another same company in KL that provide fiber optic internet, it’s still new so most parts don’t have yet and i’m not sure how good or bad the service is, but i do hope it will rise and knock streamyx down :x but of course if it’s good ;) anyway judging by the package they offer, it really sounds good, check it out:

    Fiber Optic (FTTH)
2 Mbps Upload/Download Unlimited Internet Access
    Installation fee of RM120
    Monthly fee of RM60
    Fiber Modem RM450
    Deposit RM180 for 3 months
    Minimum subscription of 1 year

2Mbps for RM60 AND it’s 2Mbps for download AND upload! Well first time payment of course expensive but who cares, in long term, they are cheaper and faster than that Streamyx, just somethin to keep an eye at, not sure how they will perform in the future, check out their site at http://www.metrofon.com.my and for Penang users http://www.penangfon.com/

Lets pray we got some other alternatives rather than that TMNET.

  26. 20% of users??? Unfair to ther rest??? What a load of bollocks! That 20% of users pay good $ for bandwidth ADVERTISED by TM themselves! It is NOT the fault of this so-called minority that this greedy corporate entity allows OVERSUBSCRIPTION and SELLS more product than THEY CAN ACTUALLY DELIVER! In some quarters, this is called FRAUD!

  27. For a moment i thought my connection is screwed. It pretty ok with normal surfing incontrast to any p2p connection that is a frozen standstill. U name it bittorrents like bitcoment, Azureus, etc even limewire and bearshare arent functioning at all. Slow slow slow… I mean if they decided to have gone broadband with unlimited service they would expect the traffic … its true that this isn’t fair as not all p2p users hog the system all day long.

  28. Btw… I wondering where is the streamyx money go? implement the services? and why limited our speed of the P2P? Torrent doesn’t really effect if the money goes for implement the services,Why other country have no problem with that? let’s just do some comparison with the singnet. (Singapore Broadband) http://www.singnet.com. $49.95 for 5Mbps and Free ADSL2 and ethernet modem, how about our malaysia? umm.. RM 88 for 1MB? free umm.. slow services and troubles?

  29. i think just like this… if tmnet cant give the customer what customer want. goverment should take action. coz we customers r KING. and always right. dont just think about profit from blind IT just paid monthly n never know the diffrent between 512k n 1mb.

TMnet said we can’ve 60% speed from our SUBSCRIBE PACKAGE, atlease!!!

we r user know where is our broadband level. its like we paid RM60 product for RM100. if ppl dont get what i said try make ur bandwith speed test.

the prob is not from p2p usage actually. or we cant blame tmnet also. we’ve to accept that we malaysian… for this time that far we can go… we’ve to pay more to have less in it.

we dont’ve to blaming each others… but we’ve to scarifies…

perhaps our new generation dont get what tmnet give us now.

  30. AS at March 21 2007, TM has 3 million internet users including some 915,000 broadband customers.

Go to the following TMnet site. the picture says you can download MP3’s in seconds. I take this as endorsement that file sharing is one of the benefits for broadband.

    http://www.tm.net.my/html/pstreamyx_more.cfm

With 915K users paying an average of say RM50 per month. TM collects RM45.75M per month which works out to RM549M per year from broadband users alone.

All of these users depend on the technology for their service, I assume it should make good sense to continue to upgrade the network and feed their goose that lays the golden egg.

Any other excuse for not upgrading the network is not acceptable. If I am a business person, this is the lowest risk of all investments. You have a captive audience with more appetite for higher bandwidth. I am sure all the other telcos bidded for 3G/Wimax licenses to get in on the action. If TM is so blinded by their success, what can I say??? If they have any common sense, they should upgrade their bandwidth offering every 12 months to keep their customers happy so that this can continue to lay golden eggs for TM!!!

If I am the TM CEO and I don’t see bandwidth offering doubling every 18 months as per Moore’s law, I would replace the team every 18 months!!!

  31. Malaysia Telekom Streamyx is sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Compare to Singapore , Thailand…
Malaysia is sucks. everything is sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!
    just only know money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. I don’t really know how is the situation in Malaysia’s TMNet… But I have been living in China, what, coming third years…the broadband speed there is not bad at all actually sometime over performance…..Come to think of it, China just opened itself in the mid 70s about 35years ago and Malaysia 50s years and their network infrastructure bypass us already……UNACCEPTABLE

TMNet, what are you doing are this years, and the government too. Targeting 25% for broadband user by the end of 2008, our government must be having sweet dream……

BTW, it can see why all the customer unhappy about… by the statistic from the http://www.speedtest.net site. Their result just between 45kB/s-178kB/s compare to USA 20000kB/s-25000kB/s. Of course, their have better network management FIBER OPTIC lah….

  33. @apa lah
It is still fortunate that if you are able to get around 45-178KB.

I am currently subscribe 1MBPS (125KB) Streamyx with my brother, but what we get is when we tried to check the speed via Speedometer in TM Net is just barely 15-25KB/S…

While our area’s Streamyx always facing disconnection problem, we still ought to pay for RM 66-88 and we are not having the service that we have paid for.

I think that TM Net is only know how to earn money, while not intends to improve their service with the profits they have.

  34. cut the pirate bittorent? huh.. wth? ezit against any “SHARING” rules? aiyo.. last time napster being sued.. but.. wut happen? den afta det limewire.. den? see.. PIRATE mean u COPY without authorization.. huhuhu.. aiyo~

  35. why dont you guys check MCMC ISP guidelines in regarding the Multimedia Act 1998, the part where it defines the standard of service should be delivered by ISPs. It’s quite detailed.

Let’s see where tmnet fails (especially packet drop rate and ), and try to start a collective lawsuit from all tmnet users. i’m sure lawyers use tmnet too.

maybe we are able “not to pay” tmnet untill service delivered within the standard in the guidelines.

  36. Well, it about protecting thier investment. Citizens are disposable. That what happen everytime.

We as responsible citizen have rigth to complain to the so called FOMCA and seek the elected representive from our community via so called proper channel for govt intervention.

Any way TM is a public listed company. Anyone who had purchase a shared, has the right to attended the AGM and voice out the issues. With majority of the shareholders votes can changes/terminate the existing incopetent TM’s workforce. However, that not the case with the shareholders, where they only wants to protect their’s investement and ripped as much as possible from the citizens. (rich become richer – alway a way to take by tricking/cone even an educated citizens (so innocoence)

What happen now, everybody expresses their discontent, which is of no use.
I hope all of u get my mesage clearly.

  37. they didnt tell us about any p2p problem then we just buy their pakage,
plus! just dont worry coz no ppl using their line surely they bankrupt
we just waste our money to them but we never complain >

  38. i think TM need 2 overhaul their service ,provide rubbish connection they even dare to say Broadband it should Narrowband in the 90′ . hope next year they will go bankrupt

  39. i think we need somebody out there to come up another company for broadband. hope some other company from outside of the country can come in and break down tmnet streamyx crap

  40. i will terminate my streamyx and tmnet account to boycott them coz they cut all our BT speeds! come on everybody let terminate their service and let them bankrupt! sial TMNET!

  41. TMnet malaysia is SIAL! stupid broadband with stupid government! pukimak! why they slow down bt speed! i will boycott them! come on fellows user let terminate their service and join other like maxis and celcom. let tmnet benkrupt!
