Malaysia iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C retail prices have been revealed by Apple online store, a week before official launch.

It is unusual that Apple Malaysia reveal the retail price for iPhone 5S and 5C before the launch date - Oct 31, 2013.

For the past years, the iPhone price only revealed on the day of telco’s iPhone launch. This year, Malaysia iPhone prices are revealed 1 week before launch date, just after the Apple special event on 22nd Oct!

What a surprise!

  • iPhone 5S 16GB – RM 2,399
  • iPhone 5S 32GB – RM 2,749
  • iPhone 5S 64GB – RM 3,149

  • iPhone 5C 16GB – RM 1,999
  • iPhone 5C 32Gb – RM 2,399

Both iPhone models are not available for online purchase yet. Malaysia telcos – Maxis, Celcom, DiGi – already start registration of interest for iPhone 5S and 5c.

This year Malaysians have to pay more for new iPhones. The prices are few hundreds more expensive than my previous price guess, which are also last year’s iPhone 5 prices. Anyway, Malaysians still enjoy cheaper iPhone price than our Singapore friends. :)

What do you think about the iPhone 5S and 5C prices in Malaysia? Expensive? Expected? Does it change your buying decision? Take the poll below:

Apple iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will be released in Malaysia on October 31st, 2013. Malaysia telcos already open registration of interest. However, as usual, all Malaysia telcos can not disclose the official prices before the launch date.

iPhone 5S price in USA is same price as iPhone 5 last year, we knew that the USA official prices are USD$649 (RM2061) for iPhone 5S 16GB and USD$549 (RM1744) for iPhone 5C 16GB.

According to the iPhone 5 comparison I did last year, the iPhone price difference is around 10%.

What are the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C prices in Malaysia?

The unofficial iPhone 5S & 5C prices

Malaysia unofficial sellers are selling iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C before the official launch date. Generally, they are selling iPhone 5C matching price in US, but set a high price for iPhone 5S.

Most sellers are selling iPhone 5C 16GB below RM2000. The cheapest I saw is from a seller on eBay Malaysia – RM1870 for iPhone 5C 16GB. For iPhone 5S, the price can go as high as RM2900 for iPhone 5S 16GB!

Why are iPhone 5S so expensive? I think most people will buy best performance iPhone 5S instead of plastic iPhone 5C repackage from iPhone 5. Plus, many people would like to buy golden iPhone 5S.

I really feel sorry to those people who bought iPhone 5S at over-charged price…

LiewCF guess iPhone 5S & 5C prices will be…

Based on previous data and my secret magic, here is my guess of iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C price list:

  • iPhone 5S 16GB – RM2199
  • iPhone 5S 32GB – RM2499
  • iPhone 5S 64GB – RM2799
  • iPhone 5C 16GB – RM1899
  • iPhone 5C 32Gb – RM2199

Do you agree or disagree?

Malaysia iPhone 5S & 5C Launch on October 31st. Register Your Interest Now with Celcom, DiGi, Maxis!

Apple iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will be released in Malaysia on Oct 31st, 2013. Malaysia telcos – Celcom, DiGi, Maxis – have open registration of interest now.

Earlier than previous years

Unlike previous Malaysia’s iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 launch dates in December, Apple launches iPhone 5S & 5C in Malaysia at the end of October. Apple make the new iPhone models available globally faster than previous years.

In fact, Malaysia is only the 3rd batch of countries receiving iPhone 5S & 5C. The 1st batch is on September 20, 2013; 2nd batch is on October 25, 2013.

Register your interest

Now you can register your iPhone 5S and 5C interest to Celcom, DiGi, and Maxis, so that you will receive the latest updates and iPhone plan price.

Please note that register of interest is not a pre-booking. It does not guarantee you will be the first to own iPhone 5S and 5C.

Register of interest: Maxis iPhone 5S & 5C

Maxis iPhone 5S 5C register of interest
Maxis iPhone 5S 5C register of interest

Maxis uses one online form for both iPhone models. The information you need to submit are: Name, NRIC/Passport number, mobile number, email address, iPhone type, iPhone color and iPhone storage size.

Register of interest: Celcom iPhone 5S & 5C

Celcom iPhone 5S register of interest
Celcom iPhone 5S register of interest

Celcom has prepared pre-register forms for iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Just like Maxis, Celcom asks for your name, NRIC, contact number, email, iPhone model, colour, storage.

Celcom also asks if you are new or existing customer in the online form. Does it make a different when you are ordering? Celcom also uses a captcha to prevent spammers.

Register of interest: DiGi iPhone 5S & 5C

DiGi iPhone 5S 5C register of interest
DiGi iPhone 5S 5C register of interest

DiGi has the best register of interest page, in my opinion. First you select the iPhone model (5S or 5C) tab then you choose the color and capacity. DiGi only asks your name, mobile number and email address.

MacBook Air 2013 vs 2012: Performance, Battery Life, Price and More!

MacBook Air (Mid 2013)
MacBook Air (Mid 2013)
MacBook Air (Mid 2013)

Apple MacBook Air 2013 has been announced during WWDC2013 and available immediately. The new MacBook Air (MBA) looks and weight identical to the old MBA, the changes are inside. New MBA uses Intel fourth-generation Intel core processors “Haswell” with Intel HD Graphics 5000, faster SSD, supports WiFi 802.11ac.

It doesn’t sound like a lot of changes, does it? Let’s check out each feature and compare with previous MacBook Airs.

Intel Haswell Inside

New MacBook Air (Mid 2013) is the first Apple computer with Intel fourth-generation Intel Core processors, code name “Haswell” with Intel HD Graphics 5000. It replaces Ivy Bridge processor and Intel HD Graphics 4000 used in old MBA models.

The clock speed drops to 1.3GHz for all new MBA models, thus requires less power. Previously, it was 1.7GHz for 11-inch MBA 2012, and 1.8GHz for 13-inch MBA. Anyway, the max turbo remains 2.6GHz.

Much battery life

Apple says new MBA is “all-day battery” – up to 12 hours of battery life for 13-inch MacBook Air and 9 hours for 11-inch MacBook Air.

In Macworld lab test, 11-inch MacBook Air lasted 6 hours and 6 minutes and 13-inch MacBook Air lasted 8 hours and 18 minutes.

The results are much better than MacBook Air 2012 models: 11-inch MBA was only 3 hours and 34 minutes; MBA 13-inch was only 4 hours 55 mins.

Better graphic performance

The new MacBook Air Haswell processor build-in Intel HD Graphics 5000 which is, say Apple, 40% faster than HD Graphics 4000 used in previous MBAs.

MacBook Air Cinebench OpenGL chart
MacBook Air Cinebench OpenGL chart

A Cinebench OpenGL benchmark tested by Macworld shows that new MBA is up to 30% faster than its predecessor.

Faster SSD

Instead of using SATA SSD, new MacBook Air uses PCIe based SSD (same as new Mac Pro 2013), AnandTech reports. Two PCIe 2.0 interface in new MacBook Air capable of 1GB/s data transfer speed. A disk performance test reveals read/write performance of nearly 800MB/s!

Depending on the drive, general maximum transfer rate for SATA SSD is ranging from 100MB/s to 600MB/s.

Doubled space, Dual microsphones

Noticed that Apple has doubled MacBook Air 11“ model storage capacity from 64GB to 128GB, and from 128GB to 256GB for high-end MacBook Air 11”. The storage space for 13″ models remain unchanged.

New MacBook Air now comes with dual microphones to help noise cancellation and improve sound quality.

Also, WiFi 802.11ac gives you up to 3 times faster performance when connected to a 802.11ac router.

MacBook Air performance: 2013 vs. 2012

New processor, better graphic, faster SSD… Do they mean that MacBook Air 2013 has better overall performance than MacBook Air 2012?

MacBook Air Speedmark 8 chart
MacBook Air Speedmark 8 chart

Not really. Do not forget that new MacBook Air has slower processor clock speed. In fact, both generations earn identical Macworld’s Speedmark 8 scores. The major advantage of MacBook Air 2013 over MacBook Air 2012 is, you guess it, “all-day battery life”.

MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Lineup

Check out the following table for the new MacBook Air (Mid 2013) lineup models and prices in Malaysia.

MacBook Air Mid 2013 lineup
MacBook Air Mid 2013 lineup

Available configurations are 1.7GHz dual-core i7 processor, 8GB RAM. High-end models are configurable to 512GB SSD.

New price for MacBook Air 2012

With the new MacBook Air announced, Apple resellers are clearing their old MacBook Air 2012 stocks. The following is the MacBook Air 2012 price list from Machines Apple Reseller:

  • MacBook Air 11″/1.7/i5/4/64GB (MD223ZP/A) RM2,699
  • MacBook Air 11″/1.7/i5/4/128GB (MD224ZP/A) RM2,849
  • MacBook Air 13″/1.8/i5/4/128GB (MD231ZP/A) RM2,999
  • MacBook Air 13″/1.8/i5/4/256GB (MD232ZP/A) RM3,599

It is RM300 different for MBA 13“ models and up to RM750 different for MBA 11” models (doubled SSD capacity, remember?).

LiewCF’s Buying Advice

If long battery life and better graphic performance are not worth few hundred bucks for you, then grab the MBA 2012 while still available.

If you would like to use MBA for the next 5 years, I would suggest you max up the RAM to 8GB because it is not upgradeable after purchase. (MacBook Air SSD is upgradeable)

If you are looking for a second notebook while travelling, the 11″ MBA is a good choice. It is lightweight, powerful, long battery life machine at RM3000.

The 13″ MBA is good enough to be your only computer, or even a desktop replacement (connect to external display). But I will wait for the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display (2013) announcement first.

You can buy new MacBook Air now, shipping in Malaysia from Mid July.
